Default oil temps and long distance driving

Hey all. When I drive around town my oil temps quickly get to about 220 but usually stays there. I live in Virginia and will be headed to south Carolina to see my sister. I'm traveling with my 8 year old too. I would take my Tahoe but I let the tags expire plus the brakes are about to go. Anyway do you think I would run into a oil temp problem driving that far with no oil cooler or should I just rent a car?

Pre-oil cooler I never had a freeway temp issue. It was always spirited driving. You should be fine.

220 is high I live in FL and have no oil cooler and on highway mine doesn't run that hot. When is the last time you changed or checked oil?

220F is not "high", in fact for around-town driving (stop-and-go) it's perfectly fine.

OP: I've got an '09 (no oil cooler) and driven 250 miles out to Las Vegas and then back with no issues whatsoever. You'll be fine.

If your gonna be on the highway to your destination it will stay cooler cause your getting more airflow to cool the car down . in town will always heat up cause of very little cool air hitting the radiator and cooling things down . and the cooling fans dont turn on soon enough for in town driving car will be ok but you should notice the hotter it gets the more laggy the throttle gets .

I regularly drive long distance and never had a problem. just a few weeks back I drove 18 hours straight at over 80 mph almost the whole time and was fine.

I just did a 7300+ mile road trip doing 12 - 14 hrs of driving per day, and my oil temp never got above 220. You should be fine.

Suwanee, GA to Hood River, OR and back. We took a northern route out (GA, AL, TN, KY, IN, IL, WI, MN, ND, MT, ID, WA and OR) and a southern route back (OR, ID, UT, AZ, NM, TX, LA, MS, AL and GA). Total mileage was 7312.7.

I agree with the above posters. I did FL to GA to FL in one day, with a dyno tune session in between (15+ pulls) and never once worried about my temps. Once they reach an equilibrium, you won't have any issues.

Thanks for the input everyone. Well I made it. Temps were a max of about 225 the whole way. Averaged about 85 mph the whole way. Now to enjoy myself and do it again on Thursday!

Sheesh, the ob/co crowd of gauge-watchers really has the newbies paranoid about the mythical oil temp problem.
