My wife said no!

Thank you very much for an excellent post. Naturally it is not what I want to hear but need to read. I am definitely reflecting on what you have said

Thank you very much for an excellent post. Naturally it is not what I want to hear but need to read. I am definitely reflecting on what you have said and having second thoughts about whether the time is right. Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to offer very wise advice. Also, I too was wondering about the cost of tires and so forth. The Pathfinder is in such good condition it looks brand new. I baby everything I own which is why my Rx7 is going strong and its an 86...

$554 x 84 months = $46,536. It's also equal to "not worth it"

I would have to agree, even though I am the one trying to sell you the car. It's not the right time. I would wait, until you are in a better situation.

You know there just comes a point in time where you need to do something for you. Get the car as you have earned it even if you spend a little more than you want. Life needs to be enjoyed at an age when you can enjoy it.

OP, 72 months? $550 a month? really? good god. I'd think twice before you bought a $32,000 car for $40,000. If you think it's worth that much, then go for it
Mine is 72mo at $642/mo.

Guess what? I'm still paying off debts, and snowballing to the next debt. I have another credit card (due to pay off in March), then a civic I refinanced (august) then the Z, with a couple of years...end up paying the Z off in 3 years or less.

Don't ask!

Yes I WAS married twice!

So I bought a Pathfinder. Last month she asked why I never drive it. I told her it is a 7 passenger vehicle, it gets 14 mpg, and so I drive my old 86' Rx7 to school where I am a teacher. My two older kids live in Texas with me ex, my oldest is in college and my 2nd oldest comes here (Missouri) a few times a year so I don't even need an SUV. It sits in the garage in like new condition and I pay a huge $644 a month for it. So she tells me one month ago I should have bought a Z. I asked about our 2 kids and she said we can go places with them in her 2009 Sentra. Soooo, I worked out a deal for a 2009 370Z, sport package, 6 speed. Yes, I know, the dealer never loses money, but they will give me $20,000 for my SUV (I am upside down), even though retail is around $18,500, give me $1000 for my ailing old RX7, and my payment will drop to $559. I am trying to get them down to $500. I drove the car home to show my wife and she went nuts. She started screaming that we couldn't afford it. I pointed out the payment is less, the gas mileage better, and it didn't make since having a vehicle in the garage I didn't drive (it has 23K on it). She argued that this would add 3 additional years to the 3 years I have left on the SUV. I argued that sooner or later I would have to have a new car down the road to replace the SUV and so would eventually have a payment anyway. She wouldn't budge. Any advice? The salesman said to buy it and she would eventually forgive me. He has never been married...

So Inspector71 what was the outcome? Did you buy it, save up or just reject the idea?

This is why I married a psychologist. Our discussions tend to be more rational, and less emotional. I know it's been beat to death, but financially I can't understand how this purchase makes any sense. To me, I think you've been saving and making the smart fiscal decisions for your family up to this point. I understand the excitement you must feel, and the feelings that the Z inspires. Hell, when I first saw the JDM spyshots I was captivated. The reality is that it will push you backwards financially, and cause undue stress in your marriage. If I were you, I would get a second job. As a teacher, you have a three month break between the school years where you could earn a significant amount of income towards a purchase like this. However, I think your wife might find ways to spend it. If somehow you do purchase the vehicle, your wife will expect something nice as well. Just basic squaw psychology . Only you know your position, and we can only go on the information given...but I think you might have a challenge here sir.

my boss is a smart guy who reads a lot of books and he once told me "forgiveness is easier to ask for than permission."
maybe the salesman was right
