That's the only way the auto skip shifts really, while in a manual, if you were in 5th going 40, you can skip to second quicker than you can with the auto in M-mode. Now that I reread your question, and I realize my answer doesn't have a damn thing to do with your question... If I KNOW I am going to drive aggressively, and I'm driving in M-mode, I will take it to the line
