The VQ gets no respect

Thanks for posting. Interesting but reminds me why the US motoring press is abysmal. These guys have about as much personality and overt passion as a pile of sand. Top Gear UK as crazy as it is and staged would present the same data with some personality.

As far as the Z commentary-- Total speculation and useless. HOLY Fk the Z is 5 years old!! Id hate to hear what they say about the 911 LOL! Any car can use improvement I dont think an entire new car is warranted. Targeted refinement much like the GT-R would be super in my opinion.

It is a great engine but honestly its time for a refresh... I have been a VQ guy for over 11 years with 2 350z's and my 370z. I cant say its the most exhilirating engine i have ever experienced..

I found the EVO 8 4 cylinder was more fun out of the box... My 370z engine seems a little more enjoyable then my VQ35 in my 04 350z but it still needs boost or something like the Celica GT-S engine had with lifters for the cams that gave it a nice pop at 6k rpms...

My request to Nissan is a 325hp+ 4 cylinder turbo with a curb weight of 2800 pounds. The engine should be able to obtain 28-30mpg or higher on highway with direct injection etc. My wifes 275hp Sonata turbo gets 35mpg and is a blast to drive.

Everyone is begging for the BRZ and FRS to offer a boosted model.... Its Nissans chance to slap a 4 cyl turbo in the Z and steal that market niche.

It got respect in its time. Nissan has really stretched the lifecycle and that comes with challenges (to the performance as well as the ability of the press to get excited about it!)

I think in ten years (assuming it makes it that long) it'll be the new miata in that there will be dozens of them at every track event and they're faster through every corner than 95% of the rest of the field.

They have concepts that tada has said arent way off for a convert. And something about a 2015 engine change. And already looking for a second gen for 2020 ish (my guess on the year)

I never hated them. I actually loved them. But for some reason I had to have a high hp car and that was the stang. Now I want to save money and everyone says how fun they are, even tho they are so slow. Ill probably end up turboing it and out 350 to the wheels after a couple years or sooner.

370 is as much as I'd like to say it...out of the questiin. Same payment as the 5.0, more on insurance, and I doubt much diff in gas consumption (I have a heavy foot....everywhere)

I'm a huge fan of it for what it is. Small, light 2+2 (if we want to consider the +2 as big enough for humans) that handles great once you ditch the Prius tires and gets great gas mileage. If I owned one, I'd swap the tires and wheels, replace the sways and springs, stick with bolt-ons and a tune and enjoy my 30mpg/200whp. Sideways.

I was really pushing my GF to get one of these so I could buy it from her when she outgrew it in a few years. I'd handle all the maintenance and mod it on the sly while she had it, so I'd pick up the perfect little fun DD for $15k or so, which is the most a 200hp car is worth to me. :rofl2:

Ahahahah yea, that'd be nice or know how it had been driven it's whole life. Unfortunately I think most people will drive them hard considering it's a car for the younger group...and no one wants a used car that was beat to he'll and back haha

Yep. Not a car to buy used. Especially after the owners all learn to drift in it. :rofl2:

:rofl2: That's more a comment on how the car is really a "My First RWD" than anything else, but thanks for your input. :p

No doubt the VQ is a great engine, even the earlier variants (i.e. vq35de), it even got wards 10 best engines 5 years in a row, but honestly I think the vq35hr should have been the last VQ and the 370 should have went with a new engine design. Don't get me wrong the VQ is an awesome engine but in 2014 it's really outdated, 19/26mpg w/ 330hp? competitors running with similar/more power engines and getting better mpg's.

The engine is a good reliable unit, it's just inefficient compared to the competitors, I mean you are getting v8 mileage out of a v6.

So I tend to agree with the panel that the VQ is getting way too long in the tooth in current form, with that said I think if D/I was implemented raising power/mpg output it could definitely live to see another day.

From personal experience the vq35hr in my 07 was one of my most favorite engines, especially coupled with the famous wookie growl (that the stock 370z completely forgot)

I agree with everything you said except, the bold. From what Ive experienced, seen, no. Not that detracts it, like I said, you wont be setting any records, nor will you in a Z. Its an in your face car saying, "Hey, Im down on the punch, I dare you to hate me." You cant, its that fun. Ive been saying since it came out, I HATED it, under powered, over priced. Time and 1st hand experience has taught me...I love it. Alot.

Ive been all over the forums about the Z, getting a 2015 to supplement our t60 volvo, adding a loaded Hyundai Gen 3.8 Touting, auto. Was close to pulling the trigger today for a 13 3.8 Gen Touring...then I saw a an audi S5, literally across the street. Id sell the old Honda we have, trade the Z in....ever drive an S5? F*ck!! Its 370 power wrapped in pure beautiful awesomeness....Im getting old.

coming from power, if its your only ride, youll miss the power. Great car, but you will. How often you hang it out on Main Street? Exactly.

Pitch 12-21-2013 07:48 PM

I love the s5. Probably one of my favorite cars. Yea, it's got nice numbers...but don't forget it weighs like 4k pounds. And maintenance costs! But if your old you probably got the dough for that stuff
