Sounds like one of the better theories to me. My personal favorite is that the system is doing an extra self-test (but that doesn't explain why it only happens some of the time).
A few ppl have reported that the driver door being open for a long time may trip the delay, but I haven't been able to reproduce it. Maybe someone will come up with the answer, but I'm not holding my breath.
