There's too many variables in the rain. Hydroplaning is bad, but it's not the only thing that can go wrong. And even if you have AWD, a sudden course adjustment can really ruin your day.
Exactly!

No == I said rain #AND# wind. Specifically about 15 mph from the front right. And the rain isn't/wasn't torrential, but enough that it should have cleaned off the road surface. Visibility a quarter mile, or ten highway markers.

I was surprised the Z felt skittery at all at this speed. Though the summer treads may have been part of the issue, now that I think of it.

Some cars which we don't think of as "sports cars" handle these conditions with aplomb. Midsize or larger MBs and BMWs, for example, are heavy road cruisers that just eat up this stuff. A lot of 4WD, AWD cars are good. My Yukon is streamlined like a brick but with 4WD on, your sane limits are that you don't want to outrun the pisspoor headlights nor have to rely on the tiny disc/drum braking set.

And to be absolutely clear, this is driving when there isn't anyone else on the road. In NJ most cars are capable of safe operation well above the posted speed limit. But other drivers' unpredictability is a major factor.

And I'm not even talking about "street racing". The key to keeping points off your license is to be second or third fastest, have a good radar detector, and watch taillights ahead of you. The lead car in a set of fast-moving cars is called the Rabbit, and his primary mission is NOT to go fast, but to absorb all those deadly radar gun rays.

IMO, driving fast in any condition other than dry is a no-no.

But you live in Los Angeles, where there isn't any other kind of weather.

Vancouver. Toronto. Florida. All present characteristic road conditions you need to become expert in (if you live or visit there).

Contrary to popular belief, Los Angeles has PLENTY of rain. Maybe not as much as Miami (since it seems to rain every day there) but we certainly get plenty of rain. Usually in June it's pouring non-stop but it's only rained a couple days this month.

Los Angeles has even had snow a few times. Our weather changes like a bi-polar teen-ager's mood. Cold as hell in the morning, blazing hot in the afternoon, and back to cold by night.

Although, right now, I'm enjoying the convertible. PERFECT weather at night.

181mph,
in the video game Need for Speed-Undercover. The one I actually drive, maybe 70. I haven't been anywhere to go any faster.

I hit 150 in my 350z
80-90 in 370z (have only had it 5 days)

165 in my buddy's Ferrari 360 modena ...yes he let me drive it. He was driving one of his other cars, lotus esprit, a bit behind me

156 in the s2000
135 in the 350z
135 in the maxima.

350 felt like a lexus compared to the s so im assuming the 370 will do 165+ no sweat unless it's gearing limited. The 350 at 135 had a lot more juice left but i ran of runway. 156 in the s i am lucky to be alive. i thought the entire car was gonna fall apart.

Most cropduster biplanes cruise at around 60-70 mph by design, so once you're up over twice that speed on the ground, you know things can quickly get "problematic".

I don't look at my Z as a plane without wings. I like its maneuverability and quick reflexes. I like the way I can launch right up to the speed limit while most cars are still getting through the traffic light.

But I'm a few cars past the time when I'd treat a 3-lane roadway like a set of moving traffic pylons. Nowadays, at most when I'm in traffic, I'll zoom some lamer in the passing lane, then clean off his windshield for him with my spray. (Some kids in the Acura forum spoke about tossing pennies up through the moonroof, but to me that's criminal mischief).

The nicest thing about having a car so much better than most on the road is ... I don't feel the need to prove it. And getting to a destination ten minutes quicker just means that much less time spent in, and enjoying, the car.
