regular gas + octane booster= ? RON

The ECM will change spark advance to compensate for different octane gas. Never heard that the Knock sensor will fail if you use different octane gas. I'll have to research

If the sensor fails and it cannot detect knock...bad things can happen sure.

Not sure about the specific car, but knock sensors often are simple electric/acoustic devices. The sensor detects noise and the system filters out knock regulal engine noise levels. Knock is typically a huge spike in that noise floor and easy to see from an algorithm perspective. They don't touch fuel and they are not effected by what fuel you use.

All of this is moot if you simply use appropriate octane fuel and not 'rely' on the safety systems of the car because you are too cheap to use the right fuel.

Rental cars do have that problem: a few times I have rented a car with premium fuel and I would bet 9/10 renters don't top off with premium. I did top off with premium just because its the right thing to do. The extra $1 didn't hurt me.

Since rental cars are new, you would hope things all work and the car has retarded timing and lower power levels due to this. Is it good for the car? I would say no. Do you care? Only if you are the poor sap who buys that car once the rental car company is done with it. I always wonder if people who buy them are fully aware of their use history.

Omg guys! Let's start a thread about what else our car can run on besides the fuel that it was intended to take! Of course, unicorn blood is the first thing that comes to mind, but what about panther piss, women's breast milk (with an octane booster, of course), and ocean water? Would that work too??

Yes, this was the case.

Actually, it reminded me of a video clip I saw one time where a guy built some crazy engine that ran on water, or just about any liquid you put in it. I'll see if I can dig it up.

37Z- find out the formula how to increase octane online. search toulene and formula or calculation etc.

then you will know why octane booster bottles dont do anything worth crap especially when mixed to 18+ gallons of gas. lol

I don't use anything in my gas for storage, I just start everything once a week let it warm up to normal temps and that's it.

I don't know how good it is to run a mixture of toulene regularly tho. Might facilitate corrosion of injector and fuel pump seals.

Seriously, anyone who bought the car and REALLY doesn't want to run 91+ AKI should spring for a "detune" using Osiris.

I'm sure you could have it tuned to run (with a lot less power) on regular or mid grade. As you can have more than one tune stored on the ECU, you could just toggle back and forth between the low octane DD tune and the higher octane performance tune.

Lot of money up front, but if you did it that way it would be safe and I guess eventually you'd make the money back.

Or... just buy premium and don't floor it so much. That will work too.

If people don't want to buy 91-93 octane, then you could always ride a bicycle.
