The only thing 2 that the Zl1 has over the GT500 is its magnetic suspension and IRS.

Still on a track it's weight is a huge disadvantage in the curves where ZL1 fans say it will crush the GT500.

I'm not sold on that.

However a 2013 GT500 Mustang with comparable options which means it needs the SVT performance and the Track Pack will cost more than a base ZL1 which has all the goodies to begin with...about $5-6K more that and well have fun finding a Ford dealer that will sell one @ MSRP or without a markup of at least $10K

BTW I love both cars ....

It will be interesting to see an road course comparo's between the (2) but i dont think the difference will be that great either...

DCNISMO 06-05-2012 06:51 PM

I bet insurance on a ZL1 or Shelby will be pretty high regardless of age. High insurance rates also helped kill muscle cars back in the day. Plus once a few get wadded up rates will go up, and they will get crashed. Both are great cars though for the dollar amount.

cossie1600 06-05-2012 08:20 PM

Have you looked at the rates for the 350? It's not that much better.....

No they are both 55k starting and I'd still like to see both in base configuration go against each other. Now the 5 to 6K that you are talking about are the performance pack $3500 and the track pack $2000. The PP is the suspension and the TP is the coolers.

At $55k the GT500 is still a faster car.

And the ZL1 buyer has to pay guzzler tax of $1300 for MT and $2600 for AT. And go to the pump more often.

Fire 06-05-2012 10:11 PM

Lemers when you pay $60,000 for a car neither the gas guzzler tax nor gas mileage is a factor. Sounds like you need both additions on the GT500 to track it. The only options on the ZL1 are appearance. So I would say that the base GT500 is a drag car and you need the $5500 for road racing. You don't need any options on the ZL1 to do either. Chevy has already said that the power train is still under factory warranty while you track the car, is Ford that willing to back it's product? Just cause you mentioned the options I went to the Ford site. To build a GT500 like my ZL1 is optioned is $63,500 for the GT500 and $58,000 for the ZL1. I can buy an underdrive sfi rated crank pulley and tuner to make over 650 hp and still add a cold air intake for under $60,000. BTW I do have atleast $2,000 earmarked for just these mods, plus another $1,000 for some body mods.

The so then you are paying about $57k for the base ZL1 even more is you want the auto and the GT500 is $57.5K with only the PP or $60k with both. So $3000 isn't a factor?

Fire 06-05-2012 10:43 PM

Nope $58,000 is with the MT, sunroof, stripe package and suede interior package.

Lemers 06-05-2012 10:51 PM

Plus 1300 for the gas guzzler makes it $59.3k

Fire 06-05-2012 10:52 PM

Very slightly rounded numbers are as follows for the GT500: Base $54,000, SVT Perf. package $3,500, SVT Track pack. $3,000, glass roof $2,000, 19/20inch alum wheels free, total $63,500.

Fire 06-05-2012 10:53 PM

My final price for my car is $58,000. That is with dest. charge, gas guzzler and anything else.

Lemers 06-05-2012 10:57 PM

What about sales tax? Why would you add one kind of tax but not another?

Fire 06-05-2012 11:05 PM

Sales tax is seperate, I did not include it in the price as it doesn't show up on the build paper. I also did not include sales tax on the GT500.

Lemers 06-05-2012 11:11 PM

I've never paid gas guzzler tax before so I don't when it's added.

Fire 06-05-2012 11:14 PM

It is included when you build the car, it shows up on you build paper.

Lemers 06-05-2012 11:19 PM

The configuration I'm looking into is

GT500 $55k
SVTPP $3500
Nav. $2300
Glass Roof $2000

MSRP $62.8k

I'm not gonna be the first to get on so I'll wait unit they are willing to negotiate

Invoice comes in around $5k less. So i not going over $60k

Fire 06-05-2012 11:26 PM

I hope you can get it for what you want.

For what it is worth, the insurance on my GT500 was a little lower than the Z. It was an unexpected by nice surprise.

I would imagine the insurance would be higher for the zl1 and 13' gt500 but not anything over the top.

FYI - the 2013 GT500 does NOT have a gas guzzler tax.

I looked up on USAA and their pre-negotiated price is $61k. Dealers enrolled in USAA's program are supposed to honor that price. So that's a worst case price.

I know the 2013 GT500 doesn't have has Guzzler Tax. I was only adding that to the ZL1. I just didn't know if it was added to the price sheet or added after with the TTL.

He also loves you Kenchan, in his rear view mirror....:stirthepot:

EDIT....I will be in his rear view mirror too..

I will be the Black and White Z/28 all sideways and smoking my tires TRYING to keep up...But only for a while until you leave me in the dust...

Fire 06-08-2012 08:04 PM

Bucket I'm sure your Z/28 is more than a capable car on the track too.

Speedy 06-09-2012 01:24 PM

I think the new GT500 is the way to go. Way hard to see outta a Camaro.

Actually you have a better chance in the GT350 or the Boss..

The GT500 is not a track car, it is a street car and full of Dyno numbers..

Horsepower does not make a track car. Too many are fooled by HP..

Just look at the man himself....Mr. Shelby...

He ran the Gt350 against the world's super cars, but funny, he did not run against the ZL-1, or the ZR-1..

He only ran against the Z06...With the GT350, which he said was the best track car....NOT the GT500..

Sure he said you can get 700 to 1000 HP out of the Super Snake, but it is not a Track Car...

Oh yes it is, but it takes so much concentration to drive the old beast, even with the Coil overs, and high end brakes and suspension..

Also the track would have to be not a high speed track...I am gear limited to 140MPH max..

So I will only be competitive on smaller tracks...But yes I would be a pain in the rear for cars that cost twice as much, but to win, you would have to make a mistake...Or I would have to let a pro Drive my car..

A man must know his limitations...

You're talking to a guy that drives a 600RWHP Challenger around man LOL For me horse power is where it's at. I like steering the car with the rear tires :ughdance:

Fire 06-09-2012 01:56 PM

:driving:

m4a1mustang 06-09-2012 01:58 PM

:icon17:

I like a mix of both. My 370 was great fun to drive. It's sort of a cross between a little sports car and a muscle car. Now I've got both... S2000 and the 5.0. But, surprisingly, the 5.0 is the better handling. It drives differently, sure, but man it just does everything you want it to!

Fire, where are the ZL1 pics?!?!

To each his own, but steering with the rear tires and high horsepower is scrubbing off speed..

Sure it looks good and is cool on the street, but track times will prove that high horsepower will not beat a better set up car with lower horsepower..

That is why the GT350 will beat the GT500 on the track, road course..But not in the quarter mile.

But enjoy your Challenger..Very cool cars for sure...:tiphat:

Fire 06-09-2012 02:08 PM

I pick up the car on Weds then it is pic galore. :pics:

m4a1mustang 06-09-2012 02:10 PM

I think you will be surprised at how well the new GT500 does on track.

Also, all the GT350 tests were done with R-comps. Put the GT500 on the same tires and I don't think the 350 will do that much better. There is only so much you can do with these cars (I own an S197 after all). After a while they all get to the same point handling wise (very good) and power/balance become the determining factor.

Where my 5.0 is at right now I will out-do a Boss 302 no problem.

Now you got me all crazy...

My Wife is up looking at the house that I made an offer on...If I get it, it is no new car for me..

I will have to wait for sure..

If I don't get it.......????? I don't know what the hell I will do...

This is the House I made an offer on....Yes, I am outta my mind, but it is a short sale..If I get it, it is an instant 200K in equity..I just cannot pass up the chance...

I believe you...I haven't driven them both, and for sure not on the track..

Funny how the dealer wouldn't let me.. So I must agree with a Mustang owner for true results..

For me, If you have a really cool new mustang or challenger, or a ZL-1, I think that is super sweet..

I am not one to say one is better than the other...They are all nice new muscle cars...I don't buy into the manufacturer wars...:tiphat:

m4a1mustang 06-09-2012 02:20 PM

I don't either. Love a good car no matter who makes it! Life sucks if you only commit to liking one brand or region.
