Pennzoil(good price, Quaker was more expensive than this) or AMSoil(too expensive though...) thx for advice NISMOZ. Should i stick to 5W-30? or is it okay if im using other than 5W-30?(ex,5-40 or 0w-50 etc) Do i need to change oil filter? I've only used new oil and filter for 800miles. My oil is already breaking down? F*** I want my money back!! Last edited by leepeen; 05-26-2009 at 12:59 PM. |

I would recommend you use Nissan's recommended ester oil (which is a Penzoil Platinum product). I suspect you'll find your engine oil will run a bit cooler and your engine a bit quieter.
It's my understanding that Nissan has a service bulletin out on this and is recommending this oil for all Nissan and Infiniti vehicles that use the 3.7L V6 engine. There are some good technical write-ups regarding why this oil is better for the engine so as I'm not an engineer and as the info is already available elsewhere I won't go into it here.

Back in the 90's my parents had an RX-7 and the factory recommended QS. The techs said that it was thinner than the other oils on the market and was better suited to the rotary... Maybe that is the problem in a high compression engine, too thin. Interesting?

A local Nissan dealer where I had my oil changed using Nissan's brand...the service manager provided me a coupon that will give me (I believe...I don't have the coupon in front of me) a $50 rebate after a specified number of oil changes (four I think) from Penzoil for using a Penzoil Platinum product.

I was surprised when my dealer's service manager handed me the rebate coupon but I have to conclude that the "Nissan Ester oil" is at least some version of Pennzoil Platinum synthetic.

Where did you hear that Pennzoil is crap? Is there are any proven issue on that certain oil?
![]() which castrol oil do you recommend?, I couldn't find castrol Edge at my area.... only regular Castrol synthetic is available...BTW, I heard Royal purple is one of the best engine oil at the market, but not with nissan VQ engines. Is it true? ![]() |

Castrol Edge is overpriced. Walmart has it for around $34 for a 5 quart container. When you can get Penzoil Plat for $20 (5 quart jug), M1 for $22 (4 quart jug), Castrol Syntec $25 (5 quart jug). Royal Purple is one of the worst oils you can get. Truth in Advertising: BP v. Royal Purple + all the tests done on bobistheoilguy.com forums.

Would be interesting to follow up on who actually makes Nissan ester. I don't believe for a minute that Nissan makes is but does hold the patent. Got some good stuff on bobistheoilguy.com on Nissan ester oil. However, no one is sure who makes it. It is not common enough to generate a lot of interest. I am sure with a little digging that someone will discover the maker and how much ester is has in it. It could be only a small %. Like some oils that advertise being synthetic but only have a small amount of synthetic base stock. Ester is not new. Amsoil makes their compressor oil with it. I would imagine that any good group IV or above would do very well. Will do some digging and see what I can find.

Just curious what it is on the graphs posted on the previous page that proves Royal Purple is one of the worst oils you can get. Seems like it did just fine to me.
I mean come on, worst oils you can get??

You heard wrong. RP is actually crap. Read the site I recommended above to learn more about oils and tests that have been done on all the new ones.
Penzoil Plat is one of the best oils out now and it's only $20 bucks!
