Because it doesn't. It only fluid couples in 1st gear. 2-7 are solid connections with locking piston.

Traditional autos have terrible drive train losses because they don't make solid connections between the engine and trans (i.e., fluid coupling); the 7AT on the Z has full lock-up (i.e., a solid connection between the motor and trans) from 2-7, so drive train losses are equivalent to the MT.
