I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Between the magazine articles and the presence of an oil temperature gauge, there's more paranoia about oil temperature than actual occurrences of limp mode.
There seems to be a lot of variation in the temperatures experienced by owners which makes me think that the accuracy of the OEM oil temperature gauge is suspect.
If the car didn't have an oil temperature gauge from the factory, we wouldn't be talking about this as much. As far as the track guys are concerned, they would just install one along with their oil cooler.

Just wait until the Miata doors are offered as standard equipment on the 2015 model!
I could just be talking out my butt here, but I'm pretty sure that some risk of major mechanical failure or a safety hazard has to threaten a large number of cars in order for there to be a recall. It took several fatal accidents and a huge public outcry to trigger a recall on Firestone tyre equipped Ford Explorers. Nobody is dying from limp mode and a few guys flogging their cars to the point that the computer implements a safety measure to protect the engine isn't going to trigger a recall. At the end of the Firestone/Ford Explorer tragedies, it was determined that user error (improper inflation) was partially responsible for the tyre failures that caused deaths. I'm pretty sure that pushing the car to limp mode would be considered the result of improper use of the car by the manufacturer and NHSTA despite what we as enthusiasts think is the "proper" way to use a 370Z.
As enthusiasts, the members of this forum represent a small number of the owners of the 370Zs sold, and amongst the membership, there's an even smaller number of people with oil temperature issues. I don't think it's a big enough issue amongst owners to warrant a recall.

On the other hand, I could see how throwing an oil cooler on the current year's car so that the magazine writers start publishing glowing reviews about the 370Z would be a worthwhile investment in salvaging low sales figures or even boosting interest in the car.
I agree on most points. Although, I find it hard to believe that they didn't put an oil cooler on this car. I had a 1987 Toyota FX16 GTS that came with a cooler.
I was sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic in 70 degree weather last week and my oil hit 240. That's pretty ridiculous IMHO.

Dude! I freakin' loved mine. The engine was like a sewing machine. I had 152,000 miles on mine when I crushed a telephone pole with it. It still ran like a top even after that. Of course the radiator wouldn't hold any water, but you can't have everything.

Edit: oh yeah. Even with no water in the radiator, it never overheated.

Go for it then! Nothing like staying up to date with your cars, speaking of which I might trade mine in too

FWIW, their reply to my email on the matter is below. I thought no harm in asking for a recall or tsb -- after all they can just say "no".

Anywho...

comments : I understand that the 2012 370Z models will be equipped with oil coolers standard. That's great for new customers, as this motor has a persistent problem with running at higher than ideal oil temps, even in normal driving conditions. Nissan needs to make the oil cooler available to owners who bought their car 2009-2011 (at minimum to those who are still under their drivetrain warranty). The oil cooler should be offered either as part of a recall or TSB, with the parts and labor either waived or greatly discounted, and protected under the customers remaining drivetrain warranty. You will be hearing similar suggestions from thousands of owners -- take this seriously and do what is right for your loyal customers.

Update.. 10/12

Spoke to Nissan Corporate for over 40 minutes on the phone regarding the 2012 370Z and the fact it has a factory installed oil cooler. Nissan Corp. will be speaking to technical folks in USA and JP regarding possible solutions for 2009 - 2011 owners who are interested in getting a OEM NissanMotorSport or NISMO oil cooler installed by the dealer and getting it warrantied. Granted they feel the engine has fault protection mechanisms in place to not cause engine problems, however, the fact the 2012 has it as a 'default OEM cooler' part tells me Nissan realized it should have been there in the first place. I conveyed this to the Nissan rep.

Currently owners can get an oil cooler installed but no warranty will be provided warranty. Based on my conversation, the Nissan rep was helpful and understood the concern current owners can have, and will be getting back to me next week.

Will keep you posted.

Just got off the phone with Nissan North America, got some interesting info...kinda making me regret trading my car in.

-Base model Z's will ship with an oil-to-water cooler, as previously speculated (can't remember who said that?)

-sport package models will be available with 19 row coolers standard, and a 34 row updgrade available. No pricing is confirmed yet, but they mentioned the upgrade should be under $500. Sport package cost will most likely be raised as well, though it is not known for sure yet that it will be

-Increased sound deadening material. They won't advertise it substantially, but they attempted to quiet down the road noise just a little bit

-adjusted intake resonator-- apparently designed to help quiet the NVH concerns

-Nismo finned diff cover will be standard--apparently the bean-counters finally understood the risks of an overheating diff, and are at least making the appearance of an effort to fix things

-Brake ducting will be available through the fangs as an add-on kit. It was apparently supposed to offered from the beginning, but a clean-looking kit was never fully finished. The genteman I spoke with was 99% sure it would be backwards-compatible.

-retrofit oil-to-water coolers will be available with full warranty protection. The oil-to-air coolers WILL NOT be available under warranty

-most importantly, your mother has grown frightful after your recent engagement at the schoolyard, and the cab is on it's way to pick you up for the trip to Bel Air.
