She's 17 and probably just thought her mommy would never do such a thing like calling the police. I fear for my generation of kids sometimes, especially if she is supposed the be an honor student and be smart.

It's more common than you think. I work at a university and some of the faculty and graduate students are academically and intellectually brilliant but -- those same brilliant minds tend to lack a lot of common sense and basic social skills. It's like you can only take in so much information before your brain starts emptying away other things...
