Default It's Not a Midlife Crisis

Geez, every time anyone see's my car, the first question I am asked is if I am having a midlife crisis. I am middle-aged but have had sportcars since 1979. I have had 5 Rx7s before the 370Z and have had a sportscar continuosly all those years so this is not a new course for me. I start to tell them a mid-life crisis means a man turns 40, buys a red Porsche, ditches his wife, and runs off with a 25 year old blonde with big boobs. I must confess the Porsche would interest me but after being married twice, you keep the blonde. I want the car. Since the Porsche is out of my pay grade, I'll take the Z. As I begin to explain this, I ask myself, why do people think that (the whole mid-life crisis thing) and why am I defending what is not true? I have come to the conclusion that they are actually projecting their desire or dream on others. Anyone else run into this?

I tell them I'm just warming up. They'll know when it really happens.

you kinda have to expect people to assume that you're having a mid-life crisis if you are 40+ with a 2 seater sports car. It's a stereotype... nothing you can do about it.

I get the same thing. I have owned and been driving sports cars (mostly Z's) -- almost exclusively -- since 1976. You turn 50, have a 370 and a trophy wife (which I do) and everyone thinks you are in midlife crisis. I think I had mine when I was 35 anyway when I realized that, like dogs, we all die someday.

I tell people I bought the Z after my mid-life crisis, and that all the wisdom I gained during it helped me make the decision!

Yep, its been told for me by my nutty menapausal live in friend. She always adds the 20 yr old woman into the conversations. I just say its an added benefit. Ticks her off. Im in great shape, a weightlifter all my life, no gray and have longer hair, financially set and own a black Z. Yeah, i guess shes right and i aint changing a thing.

Yes, my daughter said this the first time she saw my new 370 a year and a half ago. She still thinks I'm suffering a mid-life crisis. This is not my first "performance" car either.

People call it a mid-life crisis out of jealousy. The reality is that most people can only afford the noticeable 'toys' when they've reached mid-life. I mean, $hit...if I had a million bucks when I was 16, I'd have owned a Ferrari then.

I just tell them I had a crisis of running out of hookers and blow because they got tired of my old car... So I needed something sleek and new, and the 370 was just that. So I'm back in the H&B business again.

this just sounds like an excuse... you are having a mid-life crisis.

Being that I'm only 21 I haven't gotten the 'midlife crisis' line, but instead I got the 'are you trying to make up for something?' one. Thankfully this didn't come from a past partner of mine so it was easy to dismiss
