370Z lap times faster than M3/Cayman. Behind Porsche 9s.

Don't get too excited, that M3 it beat is an E36 (1991 to 1997).

I think this video does really good job of showing potential of the 370Z Nismo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8s4ElJITRc

Acceleration wise its just as fast as a Cayman S and Boxster S - maybe a hair faster if driver gets in good shifts but those PDK tranny cars are flaweless and over time they will beat you if you are manually rowing through the gears and not making perfect shifts.

The Boxster and the Cayman had definite braking advantage as they are much lighter and Mid engine weight balance lets them dive into turns a little harder. I have a lot of seat time in mid engine Porsche and its hard to outbrake mid engine cars into turns. I think Z probably has turn exit advantage.

The 911 clearly has more accleration but you can see him struggling in braking zones. Even the Z appeared to out brake him just as he got passed. But newer 911 power advantage is very clear. 370Z would rock older 911's however.

Overall the Nismo is very impressive given these Porsches with 3.4 liter motors and expensive PDK option are easily $60K to $70K cars. The 911 Is nearly $100K if it has any options at all.

I suspect I could run my Nismo with a few mods and Hoosiers in low 1:4X on Laguna Seca. A similarly modded Cayman S on sticky tires would be in similar range. Perhaps even just into high 1:39. I used to chase a fairly fast guy in a street legal Cayman S that had Moton coilovers and hoosiers and we would battle in 1:41 range. I had a 2000 lb 200 HP Porsche 914 on race slicks at the time. I could see the Nismo on Hoosiers with a few key bolt ons getting pretty darn close to those times. Randy P's times on Laguna seca in Nismo, Cayman S, and a few other cars are a pretty good benchmark as well. He knows how to extract every last bit from a given car and Cayman S beat the Z by a couple seconds. Similar margin as we see in the Japan vid.

But as everyone who drives the track will tell you your driving will make up more time than any mods. A good driver in a 370Z should be able to embarrass most average drivers in Caymans and 911's. I'm going to a Porsche Club autocross in March. Should be fun to see how a well prepared 370Z does in with all those "faster" Porsches.

It's not hard to beat them, most people go there to hang out

I think the Cayman S and the Z are going to be relatively close (within 2 sec), but it's hard to compare without a professional doing it with equal equipments. I think track would make a difference too since the Z has HP advantage while the Cayman is lighter and smaller. I drilled a video from youtube, I found my times to be very similar with his. Of course I don't know exactly what it has, but I do know my car was quicker down the straights.
