On topic???

Why is this thread even still open...I mean really, what is there to say about the "oil temp issue" that hasn't been said 100 times over at this point?

It’s sunny & 65’F today in Connecticut. I’ll bet I can get my Z’s oil temp up to around 220 in the Litchfield County hills!

The top level does not have elevator service on some of the older garages, that were built before certain code restrictions applied. By increasing the number of handicapped spaces on the first level however, we were making it easier for a handicapped person to park. I believe there are more than enough to pass code taking into account that the top level has no elevator service.

I do not favor excessive speed on public highways. That said, we have stretches of interstate in the south with a posted limit of 75MPH. People regularly drive close to 85 MPH on them. Assuming the vehicle is in good mechanical condition and tires are fine, there is little danger in that, assuming no racing is going on.

"assuming no racing is going on". I like that.

As for there being little danger at 85mph. You are absolutely right. Under certain conditions it is perfectly safe. But until Americans can push for higher speed limits to be posted and better drivers training; some cop is gonna write as many tickets as he/she can in a lifetime.

As for now. Driving even 1 mph above the posted speed limit is a ticket-able offense. Plus you are sharing the road with a lot of incompetent drivers with cars in poor mechanical condition with roads that could use better signage among other improvements.

I would not disagree with that point at all. I only take exception with those that don't realize that different climates, driving styles, AND conditions can affect the temps. For those in colder climates that don't experience any higher temps I tip my hat to you I have stated many times that in the summer here, when the air temp is 100 degrees, the ambient temps on the pavement can be 115. As others have also stated, lack of airflow contributes to the oil temperature rise as well. My drive home from work must be the perfect storm lol, I get a nice open drive and some spirited driving (winding out the gears), followed by gridlock and no airflow. In the aforementioned summer air temps, I will hit 250 to 260 oil temps. I have never achieved limp mode. I am not screaming at Nissan to buy me an oil cooler, nor am I whining, just stating the facts. I contributed this for information purposes mostly, as again, I am not whining at Nissan. I may add a cooler in the spring or early summer, as I am not sure how I feel about running 260 daily for a couple of months. I do know that the car doesn't feel as "peppy" in the butt dyno at 250/260 Anyway, no bitching here, just the facts. I would never let this stop me from owning this fine automobile, I still love it and recommend it to anyone wanting a great sports car at a reasonable price

John

Dammit I was driving just south of Litchfield today!

One of these days I'll see another 370Z on the road. One of these days.

I'm with you, John. 260 is too high. I saw 240 in traffic the other day. It was 56 outside. Come spring, the oil cooler gets installed, Mocal using the Modshack DIY, which is the same brand I installed on a Ford Fiesta I used to race, back when the Earth was cooling...

Anything over about 240 and you start to see the beginnings of viscosity breakdown, or thermal breakdown, or whatever the f you call it . Heat is never good.

One good thing that happened to mine and a few others, once it breaks in some and you get a few miles on it, in cooler weather it won't top out past about 230, even after spirited driving and traffic inhibiting airflow. Once we got out of all that extreme summer heat we get here for about two months, I was back to 220 cruising and 230 max. But I agree, I would feel better about oil breakdown and engine life, as well as better performance with a cooler

I'd like to close this thread with the OFFICIAL response from Nissan that I received few months ago.

Aggressive driving of the 370Z on a race track at sustained high engine speeds can cause increases in oil temperature and may activate this engine protection system. To avoid activation of this engine protection system and these reduced peak engine speeds, Nissan recommends an oil cooler be fitted to the 370Z before driving it on a race track. A Nissan Motorsports accessory oil cooler kit is available for customer purchase through authorized Nissan dealerships for race track use. The part number is 21300-SS370.

An oil cooler is not necessary for normal operation of the vehicle on public roads. The addition of an oil cooler would have raised the price of the car and potentially moved it out of the reach of some customers. Value has been a core principle of the Z car since the original 240Z and we choose to uphold this core principle by not adding additional costs that are unnecessary for normal use. For those individuals who choose to drive their vehicle on a race track, the oil cooler is available as an aftersales item.

The oil cooler is a Nissan Motorsports item and as such is sold without warranty, express or implied, unless expressly prohibited by law in which case the warranty provided is the minimum required by law. The installation of the Nissan Motorsports oil cooler does not, by itself, “void” the vehicle warranty. However any damage caused by the installation or use of this part is expressly excluded under the terms of the Nissan New Vehicle Limited warranty.
I currently have 12,500 miles on my Z and they are street driven miles. From cold 30 degrees weather to intense summer temperature of 110+ degrees Fahrenheit -- I could never bring my temp up over 240 (my highest oil temp in the hottest weather). Basically, if you're going to drive your 370z in the street or do quick AUTOX (30 seconds to <5 min) or drag race, you WILL NOT need an oil cooler. If you plan on tracking the Z(long road course), you will need an oil cooler. Also, putting some good synthetic motor oil (i.e. REDLINE, AMSOIL, Royal Purple etc) will keep the oil temp cool as well.

Thanks

AK
