Gonna dig this thread from the grave once again, as I experienced the same warning yesterday.
Had a full speed pull from 80-140mph and I got the "S-mode warning" on the dash. S-mode was unavailable and the gear indicator went black. The car behaved normally, but s-mode wasn't working, so rev-matching was not working anymore. I continued the drive normally, after which I turned off-on the car and it all came back on, working no problem. I have no idea what triggered it, but it happened in high revs while at high speed. Maybe the shorter diff in my case somehow confused the ECU, if it has any values on what to expect? Dunno. I'll keep an eye on if it happens again.
