Let's say on a scale of 1 to 10 and the G35 is a 5, what would the Z be? And is this noise just on concrete highways?

I did take a 20 minute test drive with the Z on the highway and some bumpy/beat up back roads and it seemed quieter and smoother than my G35, however this was all on asphalt.
You want to know how much louder the 370Z is ? Strip the carpeting and mat out of the trunk of your G35 and fold down the rear seat. That's a good start.
I owned a 2004 G35 Coupe and it was about half as loud as the Z. As much as I love my 370, the tire & road noise is so obtrusive it just about ruins long freeway road trips. You can barely hear the stereo unless it's turned up to 13 or 14 and forget hearing the quieter passages of songs or having a conversation with a passenger without speaking LOUDLY. Spirited mountain drives, not so much of an issue...

Dwight, your explanation of strip the carpeting and mat out of the trunk and fold down the rear seat was excellent. Thanks for your help.

Red Barchetta is definitely set in the future, so I always take it to be a hovercraft / spinner like Blade Runner.

Default noise v. speed

read the whole thread, long as it was. thx for all the prose and pics.
might try the rubber matting ritual ..

haven't had problem with tire noise per se, the 19's are 12 lbs ea. lighter than the 18's on the 350, so expected higher frequency road resonance. i like the feedback, can tell difference between yellow and white paint, which is useful.

seen too many references to 60mph levels. btw, dealers only test to 70, so my issue not addressable by them, which is more triple digit.

my 08 350e mt cruised fine at 135, no bassy drone. but 370/sp is droning w/ horrible booming from 90 up.. starts getting loud @95, and just increases, 130sounds like one is inside a fully loaded 4 prop b-52 bomber. maybe tires are main culprit.

wonder if hatch < the door that's raised with the window in it> could be packed inside with dynamat stuff, along with trunk surfacing?

once, maybe 3 decades back, read in a car mag that the ticking heard in the jag sedan was courtesy of 500 lbs of wool. today we have rubber with air cells etc. so 20 lbs or so for acoustic control isn't much in comparison even if it doesn't get the tick tock.

with xtra 20HP from straight H exhaust one could use up to 190 lbs of acoustic insulation, and keep same weight / power ratio as with stock zero; 500 lbs would require 380hp

a dynamat like product and some carpet insulation over the sound deading material. Gee I did that and the noise is fine. On asphalt, its as quiet as any car ive driven.

I put Dynamat all over my hatch area (both shock pillars and the latch area all the way up to the backs of my seats). Also I put some as far up into my left fender as I could reach (the right fender is not accessible from the hatch area)

It helped, but the car is still noisy.

now I'm ordering materials to coat the inside of the doors. I will see if that helps.

the guys that make GT Mat are offering free samples (10 ft square) of there product to members. you will need more like 30 to really get after the hatch and (I'm guessing) 20 or so for the doors (some is wasted when you trim the sheets to fit your panel shapes.)

Here is a photo of my Hatch as i was just getting started putting down the mat. I spoke with my dealer service manager and he tols me how to get all the trim out. (it is easy)

Cabin noise drove me crazy. I replaced my tires with Continentals and the whole cabin noise problem went away. Cut the noise by at least 60 to 70%. Best $850.00 I ever spent!

That's the set I used to replace my stock tires. Worked wonders! I recommend it to anyone concerned about road noise.
