Wink ordered custom paint job

I definitely support SPOHN's idea of custom color program. Or unpainted car delivery. My 370z is coming as 2011 model in April and I've already come to the agreement with my dealer to do a custom paint job. Car ordered in black/black will come out as yellow/black.
First, I really want yellow or orange, colors offered by the Nissan are SO BORING for a sportscar. It's a shame I've missed a chicane yellow. Second, the factory paint job is really poor quality, compared what I'm used to.

Just to let you know, the price of partial disassembly, paint job and assembly is 3400$. I think it's worth it

$3400 will get you a decent job but it won't be anything show car quality. Of course it doesn't take much to do better than the OEM job.

Wow! and I thought yellow cars were less desirable. You learn something new every day.

Post pictures whenever you get it all done!

Everyone seems to thing that the OEM paint job is poor quality mostly because it has a fair amount of orange peel. If you don't want that orange peel, just do a bit of wetsanding to level off the peaks and then polish it to perfection and voila; show car paint quality.

Question

I thought the colored paint was covered by the clear coat. If you wet sand, aren’t you only sanding the clear outer layer?

The problem with this is that the OEM paint is extremely thin. I know wetsanding won't take much off but you've only got so much.

Well, the 370z is kind of raw car. I accept it the way it is, in fact I'm happy with it as I always thought a sportscar should be a little harsh. The color should match the nature of the car.

I drive an Audi A5 in Aruba blue now, it's sophisticated, luxury, kind of serious but not boring, as is aruba blue color. It's perfect car and color for business, I drive it every day and I never thought it should be yellow or orange. Yellow A5? Yuck.

But 370Z? Common, it is not serious at all, it's all about fun, it must shout this loud! And in the world of black, silver, gray, blue and white cars, yellow does this perfectly.
Besides, yellow is clearly visible and is a good thing for a fast and assertive driven car.

Precisely. We are also going to leave some minor black parts of exterior, as well as only partly powdercoated wheels. I don't like blackout wheels on bright car as they are in too big contrast for me.

I hope to have a photoshopped picture of the project soon, will share.

Our Z paint jobs are 5.0 mills thick, give or take 0.02. The most you could safely wet sand away is roughly 0.05. This would not flatten the paint and get rid of the orange peel. You would also leave no clear for paint correction either. I think it is outrageous manufactures are sending out cars with orange peel. With a little thicker clear and a wet sanding stage we could have beautiful paint. At least make it an option, which I for one would order.

price isn't really the determining factor, but usually ive seen $6K+ for full paint job.
