Just turned 24, this will be my second brand new sports car. I never drove a beater/used car.

KillerBee370 07-15-2009 11:51 PM

^^ Well that's a shame. You actually missed out on a few things. Since you never drove a beater you wouldn't know what I'm even talking about.

As for me, 36 here and this is my second "brand new" car that falls into a "sport" or "high performance" category. My 5th brand new vehicle so far (not counting my wifes new vehicles).

And for the record, I've had a number of "beaters" and a few "used but alright" cars.

codpet 07-16-2009 12:03 AM

I've driven rentals, I've not owned anything less than a new car.

If I drive anyone else's older car, I can't cope with how it handles, or how it accelerates.

KillerBee370 07-16-2009 12:07 AM

^^ Have you driven the new Z yet?

Somebody's a little cocky!

Tim 07-16-2009 02:11 AM

edit: idk how, but i double posted this

Tim 07-16-2009 02:12 AM

^^ cocky isn't the right word
some people think they're better than the rest of us that's all
(and he lives in my city, i'll watch for a slow 4th gen eclipse around)

wait, i live in a middle class area, maybe show up to a meet on a saturday night and let everyone know what you think, you'll just get laughed at

"If I drive anyone else's older car, I can't cope with how it handles, or how it accelerates." - how does that make sense

i want to make a bet that richman cod doesn't know much about cars, just that he likes attractive sports cars, the 4th gen eclipse is easily the worst of all eclipse generations

dont bring down the z name, just go buy a porsche:icon17:

thispecialk 07-16-2009 03:42 AM

I'm 25 but 25 is the next 18

Premo34WV 07-16-2009 07:29 AM

Cocky because I can afford newer technology? You may classify me as cocky, but some religions call what you're feeling a sin.

Older cars, esp if they aren't sports cars, don't feel right when driving them. If you want to take a 1997 OldsMobile and compare it to your Z, then by all means do so, but the cars that most people drive, handle like garbage.

I don't know much about cars, I go off of the recommendations of my family members, I'm a systems engineer, I design computer systems, specifically ones used for grid computing, and mainframes.

You don't have to know anything about cars to make them move, or drive them well, just like you don't have to know a thing about technology to use a computer and check your email. There's no difference. I don't have to know how the engine moves the car, I just have to know it moves.

If I want to make my car faster than yours, I just throw money at it - it's the American way. I don't have to do my own bloody work on my car, I wouldn't consider getting grease on my hands. I have to work with fine electronics, it's my job. My job isn't to work on cars.

Also, at what point did I bring the "Z" name down? I'm about to buy the car, unless you think it's a poor decision. Maybe I should buy a 911 instead, or the GT-R? I can afford it, but it doesn't mean I feel like investing that kind of coin into something that gets me from point A to point B daily, not being able to enjoy it because I'm working in a lab.

Nope - I'm not sold on it yet. I'm comparing a number of cars, in the 45-50 range. I'm an engineer, I'm leaning towards this car, because of the engineering specs are better than the others, rather they be a Lexus, or even a Lotus.

I'm an engineer, I'll go with what looks better on paper and in theory first, and then I'll take three cars for a drive.

I have some friends telling me not to consider the Z, friends who are mechanics, one Japanese, but their reasons are the lack of a back seat, which I don't care about.

So far, I'm starting to wonder, I come on this form and people are telling me not to buy one, and that Porsche would be a better performing car. I even read a thread on this form where people who have all this experience were bashing RWD cars for under-steer.

They obviously didn't look up the ratio's for sports cars and under-steer, the engineering specs - the 370Z has an under-steer ratio of only 19 degrees, big deal, if you can't compensate for that then you shouldn't buy a RWD car. There isn't a car out there, sports, or otherwise that has a better ratio than the 370z.

I was only wondering if you had driven one yet because if so, you may not be able to "cope" with the lack of acceleration in your current ride.

Anyway, I don't know about all that other stuff. I know that I love my Z and will a Porsche outperform it? Well, maybe the new GT3 on a track, or perhaps the GT2 or Turbo in a straight line. But the 370 seems to be outperforming the Cayman S which still costs nearly twice as much as the Z so....?

Go with what you like. F it.. if you can afford to drive new, drive new. Nothing wrong with that. I just had some good times wrenching on my old beaters when I was younger and had a decent appreciation for what I was driving. BTW... "older" "used" cars can range a lot. I know a car that is at least 10 years old that you probably wouldn't have any problems liking in terms of acceleration, etc. It's called an F40.

my point was just proven, just givin ya a hard time

i just like cars,i have 4 faster ones but like the look of the z btw i'm 46

gleonard 07-21-2009 12:32 AM

33, my first sports car, first new car too. Never wanted to waste money on the depreciating value of a new car until now. I couldn't wait for these cars to filter into the used market.

I make a living by selling my paintings, so I feel like this a milestone in my life. Not a starvin' artist anymore!

MID370 07-21-2009 07:45 AM

51 when i get my first Z, and no, its not my mid life crises........thats next year when we pick up a convertible Stang in Chicago and travel route 66 to vegas, or maybe I should change that to a 370 roadster.

Cheers

Louddog 07-21-2009 08:39 AM

I will be 50 next week and it IS my mid life crisis car :)
My first car was a 1976 AMC Pacer, then I bought a 69 El Camino after high school. I have been driving company cars since 1983. This is the first car I have bought for myself since 1978.

KillerBee370 07-21-2009 10:13 AM

^^ Could be worse.. you two could be driving the "ultimate salt-n-pepper mid-life crisis car" which is of course the dreaded Corvette.

Florida_GATOR 07-22-2009 01:35 AM

Got it on my 18th Birthday! so technically bought it when i was 17... which i do believe is the youngest so far...AND THE YOUNG GUNS TAKE THE LEAD!

*And im posting this here so i dont have to later*

I got a large sum of money from the passing of my father (R.I.P. Bill Nelson 1939-2003) and i would much rather have him in my life than a 41k 370z. Im not trying to justify anything, im just trying to save myself from slander. I am going into the military and aspiring to be a Navy seal so I am trying to give back to my country. I hope you all can understand."

Too bad.....You lost a lot of good years there! Having a company car gives you the perfect reason to add a toy car to the stable.. 25 co. cars during my Tenure as a Honda Exec., but 57 others that I've bought...All fun and interesting.. The 370 is one of the best..

Ever hear of the expression "Once a man, twice a child"? It's a saying I came across years ago when living in the province of Newfoundland.

20 years of age, saved some money for about a year, paid a good lump sum and financed the rest through the in-house financing. Now I'm broke.

:icon18:This is definitely a classy forum...people actually referencing material from Shakespeare.

From Hamlet, Act 2 Scene II, Rosencrantz says to Hamlet about Lord Polonius:

"Happily he's the second time come to them; for they say an old man is twice a child."

Turning 50 in November. Just a birthday present to myself. It's my 3rd Z, my first being a 1972 240 Z when I was 22. The color was that blue/silver, I put on a Bob Sharp air dam, true spoke wheels with knock off caps, blacked out head light lens, window tint, louver on the rear window and an a## kickin stereo. I wish I could find a picture of it and post it, she was a beauty.

I get the car as soon as I get my license at 16 and a half and no I'm not spoiled I'm paying for it. I've been working my *** off since I was 14, I wanted an e46 then I sort of wanted the 335i but it was a little outta my price range the 370Z came at a perfect timing its everything I want, but my point is, even if you worked for the car I don't see why anyone should be on your case, or mine. I know I'm spending a lot but its my money, not yours.
