You have papers to prove the oil changes, that doesn't mean anything. It'll prove that you did your oil changes on time. But if their tech F*cks up, it won't be written on that invoice. So, let me get this right, the 3rd party oil change place f*cks up on their end. Nissan USA goes out of their way and give you a brand new engine. You still want to sue Nissan? wow, congratulations . You're my NEW hero
yess i dont want a defected car who knows what else can happen down the road...i work hard for my money. not gunna spend it on a new engine every 18000 miles |

![]() ![]() ![]() Over 5 quarts without a trace of oil around the engine bay, smoke or on the ground means there was very little to begin with. Period! Some of these "Jiffy Lube" type places don't exactly have the brightest "mechanics" around. OP, why you would trust your $40K sports car with a kid who makes $5 an hour is beyond me. Honestly, its easy enough to do yourself if you wanted to save money. AK has a great DIY on this forum if you want to learn. I understand why you wouldn't check the dipstick, but that doesn't mean its Nissan's fault because the car didn't warn you. It's a machine, not a babysitter. You can go after the car wash place ![]() My dad always told me to check under the hood between fill-ups. This is the very reason why you should. It sucks that this happened to you, but at least you got a good lesson from it. Good luck. Your gonna need it.

I think the oil problem (or lack of oil) has been covered. Other than the ideas other's have posted several times I am completely out of ideas. Someone did mention that maybe this has been an on going issue and it's always been slowly burning oil to the point that you're down 2 or 3 qts every oil change and it's just not noticed. Usually they just drain the oil into a big container and don't look at how much came out. Over time (18,000 miles) the low amount of oil finally caused the failure.
As for the oil light, like others showed, that light does NOT show when you're low on oil. Some cars do (like BMW) but 95% of cars it only shows when the oil pressure is low which depending on how low you are may or may not activate the light. Now going by what the dealer is saying, I would think that the light would have showed up on your car during something like a turn taken at a decent speed where the oil flows away from the pickup. ??? it's great that you change the oil every 4000 miles. I change mine every 5000 but I still check the dipstick in between. If you baby the car like you say you do, why were you not checking the oil at the very least everytime you got gas? |

i think the OP has inadvertently helped us. Anyone who has read this thread, and wasn't already that particular about checking their oil, has probably checked their oil. In his convoluted way of saying so, he has tried to say that his is just trying to help so this doesn't happen to anyone else. All i know, is that reading mystery stories like this will certainly make me check my oil. hearing stories like 'OMG MY ENGINE DIED! BECAUSE I HAD NO OIL' make you a lot more motivated to check your oil than ' OMG I CHECKED MY OIL AND IT WAS LOW SO I ADDED A QUART AND THEN IT WAS OK!'

What I've learned from this thread:
You can post a legitimate question about a topic that might have been discussed on this forum before and get the facepalm or a "use the search" or an RTFM as your response. Make fantastic claims about blowing up your engine while writing like a teenager on MySpace, and people will write paragraphs in response. Well done, DaZkilla.

The bottom line is this:
No one here will be able to tell you what happened. You should check your oil level with the dipstick regularly, but realize that sudden, massive leaks obviously won't be caught with a weekly dipstick check. You have an uphill battle with Nissan if you want them to replace your motor, given that you have no proof of who changed the oil or how the leak/burn occurred. We can now close the second thread on this issue.
