Consider your DSLR a once in a long time purchase and get as much performance as you can get. The Nikon D 7000 is getting great reviews and I would atke a look at it if I were you..

I was shopping for a DSLR and was looking at the Canon D60 (I have been using Canons since 1973 and am brand loyal). I went a little higher though and got the 7D and it is worht the extra bucks. Much beefier, better feel, performance, etc., and I expect this to be my last camera purchase for many years. IMO.

D5100 is cool for a nice starter. My dad always told me, among other things, "always buy a little more than you think you can afford". He may have been right, I don't really know. He also told me things like "stop or you will go blind", yet I see perfectly still.

so i will buy the 5100 for $850 (was a little more than 700

) and then like next year i'll end up getting the D7000 or D7100 anyway wasting $850... okay, ive been through this route long time ago with my musical instruments. lately i only buy flagship models and keep it for like a decade.

i still have time to think this through.

I didnt know much bout photography at all when I got my D90. Its way more camera than I needed. But thats whats great Im constantly growing into it. Everytime I use it I fig new stuff out. The manual looks like the Bible, yes, but dont be scared. Learn your basics and you will be taking great shots with ease. It will become a new hobby I assure you.
