Scary - should I be concerned?

NO, shifts 1-2nd should be smooth and no different than any other gear.

as we all know, gear ratio is farthest between 1-2 vs 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6.

so it makes it a tad more challenging to get a smooth shift. i dont think it's that difficult to get a smooth shift on the 370z.
