Nice!! played with the idea of a tranny swap on the wife’s car for a few sec. Why not the new 9AT? Either way, I heard the VR30 7at has better shifts and logics. Congrats

Thanks for the advice guys.

JB Weld is very thick, it can't seep in, no worries about that. I'm also thinking, since it's just a breather tube, the pressure flowing isn't too crazy, and if the tube isn't pinched, just JB Weld should be ok....right? Or am I forgetting anything?

I contacted the guys who fixed my diff to see if they'd send me a new breather tube or not, so I'll see what's the easiest option. I really wanna make sure it works well (either reinstall or fixing) because I really don't want to be dropping my diff YET AGAIN.....

Okay, so i got around to testing this damage. I just bent the tube back and it's still pinched. However, i tested pushing a plastic zip tie thru it and it goes, meaning that the tube still functions, and it's not *that* heavily pinched. So I'm definitely going to jb weld around it to seal or and that's that. I have another question though: i noticed that the base of the breather tube rotates. Is this normal, or is it broken? It doesn't rotate freely, but i can rotate it if i try.
Thanks!

I haven't seen any info. on 9AT fitment yet and figured it would be very expensive considering they're mostly brand new if they do fit. I'm thinking being the Z needs to retain its TCM marriage with the Z ECU (have to swap the Z TCM into the VR30), I doubt the 7AT TCM will control a 9AT.

My '10 101k 7AT was having issues with flair-ups when shifting in both manual and auto mode. When downshifting in manual mode there was a "double bump" upon catching the lower gear; almost like a blown mount slop feeling but the mounts are fine, so it seems the slop was within the Z trans. Also, when downshifting in manual mode, instead of holding the gear down to 1,500 rpm then freewheeling (normal Z trans. operation), the Z trans. revs would frequently fall from as high as 2,700 rpm causing freewheeling instead of holding the gear like a manual.

The 2018 VR30 trans with 60k I sourced remedied all of the above, rev matching is much faster  and the VR30 was $375 with the torque converter included! FYI, you DO NOT need a Red Sport model trans. as the only difference between it and the other VR30 trans.' is the RS TCM has the same rev match downshift feature as the Z TCM you're swapping in anyway. Otherwise, all the other hardware within both trans.' are the same per Godzilla Racing.

The only quirk I'm left with is the harsh 3-4th gear shift for which I've already done the TCM update which fixed the issue for a few months then resurfaced in the Z trans, unfortunately that carried over to the VR30. I work around it in both trans' by lightly lifting off the accelerator slightly to lessen torque demand thereby commanding a "lighter" shift which is smoother. I wish ECUtek had a TCM reset option like the ECU, being it doesn't my only chance at a TCM reset/relearn would be disconnecting the battery and then all systems start anew.

I had the ECUTek torque modulation for the Z trans. set at 130% of OE which is too harsh for the VR30 trans. as the shifts are so abrupt the car lurches forward lifting the front end (within the suspension travel) during high throttle position shifts. I know the VR30 vs. Z trans. OE For OE shift logic is more aggressive in the VR (most likely due to valve body design and different solenoids), so I'll be adjusting the torque modulation within the tune to suit my needs during future drives. I only got about 10 miles in after finishing this weekend before rain started for 2+ days but I'm VERY happy with the results thus far. :happydance:

Cheap thrills with some Morimoto LP lights...amazing how much dirt clogs up the inside of the rear bumper - So enjoy a mt of dirt falling when you replace yours:

BTW: Does anyone know of a clip unhooking tool specific for cars? Basically some a plyer set specific for unclipping electrical clips - kind of one of those "nice to have" tools... What do the stealerships use? While I don't "mind" using a flat head at times - some of them require brute force leading to broken clips/fingers... Luckily these lights were cooperative...

The Z runs well. I've been using the bike more though.

I was a dip$hit and broke a rear SPL endlink, so i thought i'd give the Z1 adjustable endlinks a try. So far, they work fine.

I need new rear tires but the Michelin PS4S in 305s (and 285s) are now $420 a piece. I might as well just go with some 200 TW on the summer set for a little more so I might just get four AD09s at NISMO OEM sizes vs the upsized set. I didn't like how the michelins handled anyway. Steering input was very vague.

I'm currently waiting on my Craft Square mirrors. We're going into month 5 haha.

I received my diff with 4.08 gears installed! The specialist also took time to sandblast the housing and paint it so it looks brand new.
The only issue is....the carrier wasn't too careful with the package and this thing got bent and broken. Is it just a screw off/on piece?

To follow up on this bent breather tube...today I went ahead and fixed this. At least, I think I fixed it.

So what I did was, bent the broken tube back into place. Then I tested it for pinching - I inserted a plastic zip tie into it, just to see if it goes through. It does, but it jams in the pinch unless I twist it. That was expected, as the pinch is just perpendicular to the angle the zip ties goes in.
Anyway, I used JB Weld which I put around the whole tube, as the lower part of the breather tube wasn't completely stuck in the diff cover, but it was possible to rotate the tube if tried.

I know there was an option of changing the differential cover altogether, but this wouldn't work for me, as the high capacity covers interfere with the additional diff brace that I've got installed.

I don't doubt that this fix will hold, I'm just wondering whether it will seal it well, or am I looking at the oily diff cover every few weeks....

You can remove the cover. Drill and tap threads in the hole. And install a barbed fitting. That's what I would do. Since the diff isn't installed yet.

This would probably be the best option, but I don't have any thread tapping tools right now...and I'm a bit on the fence if this is a "good enough" fix for this or not - as what you suggested is definitely best, but requires additional work and some tools I don't have...

abm89 03-07-2024 07:24 PM

I finally bought a small pressure washer (mainly to clean my small patio), but it came with a foam cannon. I learned it goes through soap QUICKLY.

I gave the car a wash, trying out some GTechniq products and it looks pretty good. I have the summer wheels/tires on right now but they ride super wonky compared to the new all seasons I have. At a minimum i need two new rear tires and those Michelins are eye watering now.

The old stillen bumper is on because i plan on painting my dive planes and re-clearing my Top Secret Lip for the OEM style bumper while I'm off next week. I might also do a gear oil change while I have the the time off. I still have the parts needed for the front motor maintenance, but I have no cooling issues and the Oil pressure is comfortably at 1.7bar (25ish PSI) at warm idle which is well within spec. I kinda don't want to mess with it if it's fine haha. 152.5K miles!

Look for “electrical disconnect plyer”. I recently was on a mission looking for one, finallly got to the keywords that yield decent results.

LOL I saw these pictures on Amazon when i went to look for some clearcoat for my upcoming project to re-finish my Top Secret lip.

I used to own a WRX (2016 6MT). It was alright but you can easily tell the quality difference between that and the Z.

markesc 03-16-2024 08:49 PM

Yeah I understand the quality has vastly improved since 2007 in the subaru world... but...

ERA paints did well for me so I figured I'd give 'em a positive review. Get yourself a solid 3m mask and goggles - the clear is super toxic and it's like a cloud when you go to spray!!

I took a stab at re-clearing the carbon lip. it's old and beat up, but the fact that its Top Secret meant it is worth the effort of making it look better. I'll cut and polish tomorrow with a 1step and see if it's halfway decent. I didn't want to spend too much time on it.

I need to re-adjust the rear sway bar endlinks, get some new rear summer tires + alignment, and change the gear oil. all in due time i guess.

Noop, never had a need too.

abm89 03-28-2024 08:46 PM

Tires arrived today. I have some days scheduled for a road-force tire balance and an alignment to take some camber out. I'm still runing a "track biased" setup and it's no bueno for wet traction on a poorly draining highway.

I let a friend know about the deal and he was able to get a full set for his 1LE Camaro.

haZnismo 04-01-2024 08:14 AM

For the first time since the installation of carbon fenders, I took pictures of my Z.
I'm glad to see the fitment of the nismo fenders flare with the carbon fenders doesn't look off, it looks awesome and gives an even wider feel to the fenders.

Thinking about some MX72 pads from RHDJapan. The Yen is so weak, even with more expensive shipping fee, final cost is much cheaper than I’ve seen from US based vendor.

And good coilovers like Aragosta Type S and Ohlins DFV are sub $2k.

Every time I drive the wife’s V2, I have to suppress intrusive thoughts….seats, headlights, door handles, steering wheel, interior trims……:roflpuke2:

abm89 04-09-2024 12:28 PM

speaking of intrusive thoughts, i pulled the trigger on some headlights. Hopefully I like them. I'm not worried about the install. I wired in a Haltech dash, i can wire some damn headlights.

I picked up a Z1 strut brace while I was at it. the steep discount and the ability to adjust dampening without smashing my hand seemed worth it enough.

I did clear coat the Top Secret lip and it looks MUCH better. it's not perfect but a major improvement, so ill take that as a win. Ill be cleaning my air filters when i have the bumper off this time and mounting the fog/driving lights further forward.

Z_ealot 04-09-2024 09:45 PM

Tore down the front of the engine on my Z 2 weekends ago to address an oil leak caused by a cracked rear timing cover, took my time and made sure all seals were replaced and accounted for and that I upgraded the bolts and gaskets on the oil gallery along with dabbing all the upgraded screws with blue lock tite, unfortunately one of the wires for a connector on the ac compressor decided to disintegrate so have to fix the connector and get that connected back up before summer gets here, but otherwise she’s back up and running and acting as if nothing happened :)

I LOVE my Morimotos. I got the taillights too. I think they are the coolest headlights on any car. And I got a REALLY good deal on Black Friday.
Love your setup.

I can’t tell if mine need adjusting or if it’s just because the light output is so different.

Since this thread seems to be the bulk of all posts anymore, I’ve got a wheel fitment question for you knowledgeable peoples.

I’m pondering new wheels and was wondering if this setup works for the Z?
I’m pretty clueless about wheels, so forgive my ignorance.
