Seb's tune was worth every penny. Now to clear emissions so I can reload it. Only things still showing "not completed" are evap and fuel system.

I'm not sure about your state but even in commiefornia they won't fail you for "not complete" evap system

Z_ealot 11-08-2020 08:19 PM

Little maintenance done today, swapped out the spark plugs with almost 105,000 miles on them with some brand new oem denso, also discovered that both valve cover gaskets around the spark plug holes are leaking so i guess time to swap those out.... also i don't think i mentioned it but i had a poly transmission mount installed a couple weeks back.... what a difference in driving feel!

Failed my azz twice for it here. But the 2nd time was also a fuel system not complete and I dont even know what that means lol

I'm surprised they failed you on that. I have no idea what fuel system incomplete means either. It's not like you haven't driven the enough for them to reset. I don't know if this will help

Thanks brolo. I've driven this skank over 4k miles since all this started. Failed 2 tests. After you fail the third you have to make an appt. And I can't re-register the Z until I pass.

So I'm going back in for a 3rd try and this time I'm going to have a nice, calm, chakra-aligning conversation with the 'inspector' - Chicago-style.

POS threw some code so I threw it into the garage for winter and will look at it next year.

JARblue 11-09-2020 09:16 AM

I drove it to work :driving:

Hope it doesn't rain because it doesn't have any windshield wipers installed right now :ugh:

Also spent some time the past few days trying to figure out a noise. Fairly certain it is the exhaust making the noise. Hope to data log a little bit this week to send to Seb for a retune

Nope. It almost sounds like the damn throwout bearing (which is brand new) :ugh:

It happens around 2.5K RPMs. Can be engine braking in gear. Can be stopped in neutral and give it the right amount of throttle to make the noise. It happens briefly during gear shifts, too. Would be annoying except for racecar! Plus during the gear shifts it kinda sounds like a blowoff valve for my poser turbo :icon17:

That sounds like good old test pipe hiss lol

abm89 11-09-2020 02:27 PM

Welp, Smoke test saw leaking out of the passenger side exhaust, something is up with that side of the valve-train or cylinders. I did notice that I've always had a light oil haze on one side vs the other in the past when cleaning the lower manifold so that may not be the leaning issue (I'm never burning a ton of oil between changes). He's gonna check the fuel pressure to see if that may be it.

When they tested it. The engine may have one cylinder at valve over lap. Where the intake and exhaust valves are both open. Crank the engine over and do it again.

That's what i'm thinking. with the frequency of my oil change intervals (and checking the dipstick on fillups, i doubt this IS a problem. I'm gonna let him test the fuel pressure and FPD and get back to me. we did confirm that my connections and hoses are all not leaking so that is a good thing. If the fuel pressure comes back ok, ill look into getting the injectors cleaned/replaced. Pulling the plugs should tell me which ones are acting up, unless it's all of them lol.

Yup. I just haven't really heard it like that in a Z before. I'm running FI test pipes with non-resonated FI exhaust with CF cans. I wonder what FP's straight pipes sound like.

Flacid, buy a new Z and sell me your axle-back straight pipes so I can test it out lol

abm89 11-12-2020 12:38 PM

Talked to the shop today. It sounds like I just need a retune. Fuel pressure was tested at 55 psi, so Kevin is gonna swap out my motor mounts and I'll pick it up sometime next week.

I'm just glad nothing catastrophic is wrong with the car. I'll probably throw some new injectors in and get it retuned.

When you drove mine, you didn't hear the hiss?

Sure did. It's not even remotely the same. I'll do a video of it one of these years.

Looks like something Zoren would try to use. He's the only one who'd say quack.

Got the car back from the shop yesterday. New motor mounts feel good but im still trying to figure out what's up with my car. I'm probably going to pull the injectors and get them bench tested, and at the same time, I'll pull the spark plugs and check them. I changed them out at around 80k i think?

abm89 11-19-2020 09:54 AM

New plan: after speaking with my tuner, we're gonna have some fun and get some higher capacity injectors *evil laugh*

Pulled my fuel injectors today and tested them. Found two faulty injectors in cylinders two and four. I will be ordering a brand new set of fuel injectors for build. Enjoying working on my Z!

I'm going to still test my stock injectors whenever I put the new higher capacity ones in. I'm curious to know what kind of shape they are in.

Depends I found out for myself before with other vehicles I have owned in the past it’s your luck of the draw with fuel injector life. Been using top tier gasoline as recommended by Nissan about 95% of the time. I had a slight hesitation or “Hiccup at idle”. Injectors in cylinders two and four were not making a consistent
pulsing noise when diagnosed. O rings on injectors in cylinders two, four, and five looked bad. In my experience I found using Chevron fuel injector cleaner works at keeping your fuel injectors clean and fuel spray pattern correct. I recommend using fuel injector cleaner and fuel system cleaner it will help. The stock fuel injectors are nice to have as spares on hand. I got these fuel injectors yesterday!! Will be using them for my rebuild.

I told you that stuff doesn't work. Chevron is one of the worst top tier fuels out there.

Shell gas is the best. It cost more but it is worth it because they use the best additives of the all.

It’s never too late to switch fuels. I have seen Shell 93 near me I can use it on my fill ups.
