Default "service engine soon"

I got this warning light on my gauge(40K miles on my car). I know diagnosing this issue online would be impossible but I was curious if any of you guys ran into this and how you went about fixing it. Did you take it to the dealer or a private shop? How much did it cost for just the diagnosis?

Have it scanned for code? Most likely it is oil or something that needs changed.

Sounds like the warning light for your oil change.

If you bring it to any larger auto part store, they will plug into the OBDII port and suck the code information from the ECU. From there, you can start to diagnose the problem. Could be anything from a loose fuel cap to a hundred other things. Keep us posted on what is found...

I bought a code reader off Amazon. Like $30. Has served me well. Esp. if you have mods, not uncommon to throw a code. Get the code, Google it, and if it doesn't look major, reset it and see if it comes back.

If they only read them right. That would be even better.

Buy one, it's we'll worth it. Already saved me a lot in time & money on the 4 cars I've had since getting it.

The SES light is most often related to emissions issues.

An OBD scan tool is your best friend when it comes to trouble-shooting modern cars.

Get the Bafx Bluetooth OBDII from Amazon to work with the Torque app, just got one, works perfectly for $22.

It's not. That's not the maintenance indicator. It's the check engine light.

Bob,
Other than pulling the bulb out of the light and cutting the wire to the buzzer, (both actions HIGHLY not recommended, lol) There isn't any way to "turn it off". You want that system in working order in case something serious goes wrong.
The easiest way to keep it off is to make sure all of the systems on the car are in good working order. If the system does display a code, you need to have it diagnosed. Every time. It is always a possibility that something different has gone wrong that needs immediate attention to keep from having to dig very deep into your pockets.
Modifications to the intake and exhaust will often cause a code, and may require you to come up with some kind of workaround to keep the light from coming back on.
Take your car to Autozone, or one of the other name Part stores and have them scan for the code. You don't even have to buy their parts, if you don't want to.
