Its really about air intake to air output ratios as well as the speed it does it at to create the combustion.

I've done it very few times in my Z but its usually while I am running 1 and a half to 2 gallons of my racing 120 octane fuel, and going through GMR downshifting real high to make the exhaust actually backfire.

I had blown stock catalyzers and the FI 18" res CF CBE at the time. Although the sound has been much more aggressive and the exhaust pop is a lot louder, since the install of my BERK HFCs I no longer get the backfire like I had.

I also have a pair of LTAI's no one ever gets nor really speaks of too. I think I had a rare setup with how blown my catalyzers were and the air intake I had paired with the exhaust might have been the reason for why I was able to backfire at times, although it is not normal for N/A to be backfiring. Mind you my backfiring I speak of was a couple flame pops at most.

Turbo'd setups are much better for acquiring major backfire

Truth. I'll literally have 2-3 on my 30 minute drive to work. Usually only when I am having fun. =)

My Abarth that I traded in for the Z was quite good at spitting out flames between high rpm shifts and sudden throttle closing on full boost. Usually multiple pops and snaps. I could make it backfire on demand. Man that little 1.4L sounded great! Honestly, the ONLY thing I miss from that car.
