In Ontario Canada careless driving is also a criminal offense and not just a driving offense. Not sure about down there but it really can't be that much of a hassle to check. Better safe than finding out later and getting a bigger fine or having your car impounded. Still driving over the line doesn’t constitute careless driving and would most likely get thrown out in court so maybe he did tear it up.

In Louisiana, "Careless Operation" is a Traffic Statute (Revised Statute 32:58) while "Reckless Operation" is a Criminal Offense (Revised Statute 14:99)- So, have fun, just don't go nuts...
