Because I still own my car. I lived in England (with my Z), and now I'm back in America, so I never got rid of the plates.

Great - so apart from a UK registration lesson for our friends over the pond nothing came out of it

I'm worried about blowing your mind now - but if you have a valuable plate say for instance 51MON which is worth about half a million dollars in your money, then you put it on a retention certificate if you don't want to put it on your car - ie it simply becomes an asset you can sell - it doesn't belong to any physical car. Its very big business in the UK.

Put another way if you own the plate A1 you will never need to work again !
