So you have to get a new plate every time you get a new car? You can not re-use the same plate?

The plate stays with the car; you'll only have to buy new ones if the old ones get worn out or something. You get a document called a V5 when you take possession of a car that will allow you to have plates made at any time. Instead of having to go through DVLA (their version of the DMV), you can go to any number of shops that are licensed to produce them. I kept mine as souvenirs when I moved back, sitting on my work desk next to me now haha.
