Pilot worst of the bunch at 8.8mg... these are the measurements of detergents put in by the individual refineries ...as the gas is sold to these individual refineries often from same supplier, the government says all refineries must use a minimum amount of detergents and cleaners...some use more than others and even better quality...BP and Shell for all octanes 87-92 are the best.
Shell puts nitrogen mixtures and charges a little more for it...it mearly ignites more aggressively..is there a benefit for 8-10 cents more a gallon ??? maybe.

The biggest keys...use a pump that has multiple hoses , if you use a pump with a single hose...you could effectively pump 3-4 gallons of regular 87oct gas , when your paying for the premium. Not a good thing if your car requires premium grade.

Also visit a busy station...the fuel aren't in the tanks for weeks at a time...kind of like popping a beer and drinking it 4 hours later. Fuel can lose it's potency however still flammable.

Also Pilot, Citgo , Marathon are substandard with 10.6mg or less of detergents and cleaners per 100 ML , this is what ultimately helps your vehicle to perform better...not the octane measurement. Constant use of weaker fuels will lead to deposits and gum in injectors and lifters causing poor performance and reduced fuel economy .

Some Sunoco stores have up to 94 octane not necessarily better but...in the state of Delaware , they have less oxygen in the fuels and burn more efficiently...yielding slightly better overall performance and fuel economy.

Hope this helps !
i've always wondered about this, as 99% of the gas stations in my area only have single hoses and i've always wondered if a bit of lower octane gas comes through from residue.

The hose used in a typical gas pump does not contain 3-4 gallons by itself. The most volume is probably around half a gallon, if that.

For the poster that said there is only a half gallon in the hose...this is a dated pump however there are many many feet of lines going thru filters and valves for switching to achieve 89 Octane...split of 87 and 92. If you are pumping 89...you can hear the clicking back and forth between the 2 grades to make 89 octane.

Shell and BP only for me. Many years ago I used Speedway until I noticed how dirty it made the throttle body on my '89 Sentra. After cleaning it up and using other gas it always stayed clean.

Around me the prices are all competitive so I can pay the same price for BP and Shell as I would for let's say Speedway.

Mobile and Shell. I prefer shell when I can find one.

With single hose dispensers you may get a quart of previous grade gas before selected grade comes thru. More like .16 gallon.
Since gas is stored underground, outside air temps have no effect on it, doesn't matter what time of day you get it. Gets most of its heat while sitting in bulk tanks above ground. When its 100 outside and you are filling car, feel nozzle tip when you are done to see how cool gas is going into tank. If you get gas where it is stored above ground, then it can get a lot warmer.

It also depends where the blend valve is located in dispenser, the ratio is set after all filters, meters and such. Its always interesting what people believe about gas dispensers.

Shell or BP for me. I use to be a Amoco only guy before they sold out to BP, or whatever happened.
