If I don't have my hand lifting up on the hatch when I hit the release button. It won't open sometimes. I've put washers in the black plastic spring cans

If I don't have my hand lifting up on the hatch when I hit the release button. It won't open sometimes. I've put washers in the black plastic spring cans on the hatch to help. Some have used pennies.
