The first time I ever did a sound deadening project I listened to the BS and did 100% coverage with Dynamat. What a waste.

Now I know all of the elements required for a proper deadening job.

well unfortunately, the money has been spent...:shakes head::ugh2:

This is in a 2005 Civic.

CLD Tiles:

Building up the layer of Closed Cell Foam:

Adding the Mass Loaded Vinyl (the actual sound barrier):

Trunk floor completed, all gaps filled, CCF under all of the MLV:

m4a1mustang 02-08-2013 09:03 AM

This is improper coverage:

http://sounddeadenershowdown.com/wp/...hiny_trunk.jpg

Unfortunately a lot of people do this but it is not effective as a sound barrier.

eastwest2300 02-08-2013 09:04 AM

damn...

m4a1mustang 02-08-2013 09:05 AM

This is the only picture I have on my phone of me building up the CCF layout for my passenger floor:

Oh it is man. Applying the CLD tiles is real easy. You just figure about 25% coverage and try to do it evenly.

Then the hard part is building up the CCF/MLV templates so that they follow all the contours of the panel so you can get the carpeting back in.

FWIW, I use 1/4" thick CCF and 1/4" thick 1lb per sq/ft MLV. Any thicker probably wouldn't work in a sports car.

eastwest2300 02-08-2013 09:06 AM

We should do a group project..steve, you can show us how to do it the right way.

Damn, I had no idea it was this involved.

m4a1mustang 02-08-2013 09:09 AM

Anyways, in dm's case, I'd start with covering 25% of your hatch. Tap on the panels before you start, then keep doing it as you add material. You'll hear a substantial change in sound as you go along. 25% coverage is all you're going to need.

This should eliminate all of the panel borne noise... it MIGHT be enough to take the edge off of the drone... if you want more then you'll need to look into CCF/MLV coverage.

Oh it's a PITA. Especially in the S. There's only so much space to work with. Adding deadening to the floor and trans tunnel cost me one rearward adjustment on the seat sliders, and moved the seat up 1/4" or so.

Have you admitted yet that you were horribly wrong about the Superbowl? :p

Well we got to the AFC championship and led it at halftime, which was still pretty close. Yeah it was a bit of a miscalculation because I didn't take Ray Lewis' retirement into account. :p

Ohh dude, it was a nightmare getting the drivers seat out, those 2 rear bolts that hold the seat down, it took a ton of strength to get them out.

Getting the bolts to line up with all that sound deadening added is even worse. :shakes head:

ray lewis had nothing to do with it, the patriots got out played. Just saying.

dmhenderson 02-08-2013 09:28 AM

That's weird. Although there were a lot of bolts, I had no problem popping the Z's seats out.

I'm not denying that. Just saying that Ray Lewis' last ride comment definitely motivated the Ravens to step their game up.

eastwest2300 02-08-2013 09:43 AM

I can agree with that, but for the Patriots to lose at home, that was the bigger hurdle to overcome than his speeches, and he's given quite a few of them over his career, they dont translate into wins.

m4a1mustang 02-08-2013 09:44 AM

No doubt the Pats helped the Ravens in that game. Lots of dropped passes. Like Gisele said, Brady can't throw AND catch the ball.

Oh I'd definitely say they do. Just look at the 4 games for the Ravens before the playoffs and the 4 games after. There was a clear difference in their playing.

:iagree: We had plenty of opportunities to win that game, but we played like crap. It doesn't matter anymore though, now we look forward to 2013 season where the Patriots will be playing in Baltimore again.

That's how I feel about the Ravens, 49ers, Giants, and the Jets before this past season.
