Default Mid Atlantic Cruise: Loch Raven to Pretty Boy

AKA the "Big Dam Cruise"

I want to plan a cruise from Loch Raven Reservoir to Pretty Boy Reservoir following this route:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...,0.727158&z=11

This is only tentative. I would like to do this during a weekday, so that we can drive all of Loch Raven. Otherwise, the cruise route will have to be modified.

Both roads have you driving over the dams at these reservoirs. Hence the name.

Details are being worked out, so I'll update this later.

Sounds good. Were you planning on doing this in the daytime or at night?

Tough to say. If it's on a weekday, it may have to be an evening cruise, just so people can attend. If, however, we can get it on a holiday, we may be able to start early, which would be awesome.

We could, alternatively, start at Pretty Boy at the break of dawn and then drive to Loch Raven.

I say Friday evening cruise would be good since no one has work/school the next day. Also I don't have to worry about getting any hw done

Cool

With the days getting longer, there might still be daylight outside when we actually do this cruise.

We can't do this one this Saturday because the thing is closed off right? If we can do some or a large portion of it, then I say we use this as the cruise route for this week.

Too late to do that, imo.

Let's stick to the original route for this weekend and plan the big dam cruise for another time in the near future.

Guess I'm going to be calling out sick. Count me in for this. If you can give a couple of weeks notice on this it would be even better.

We should find a member who lives in the area and do it on a weekday during the day and then have a BarBQ at their house afterwards!

If you do it at night I'm going to need to borrow headlights and there is going to have to be a minimum 7 car length or more following rule.

Brian, we haven't set a date for this yet. This is just in the planning phases.

The endpoint of the run is a restaurant called "Friendly Farm" that has a large parking lot. Food is pricey, but it is what it is.

Agree that following distances need to be reasonable. The turn onto Kidds Schoolhouse road off of Beckleysville Rd is a hard right at the end of an intense S-turn. It's barely visible.

Intense S-turn with a 90 degree right.....so what your saying is the best way to manage it is:

1. Enter a turn at a speed too high for the vehicle to handle (if you do not drift, your vehicle should experience understeer at this speed).

2. Heel-Toe Downshift to get your vehicle into a gear low enough to cause the rear tires to break traction when you accelerate (2nd gear).

3. Turn your wheels sharply into the turn. By the time you finish downshifting and turning your wheels, you should be at the apex of the turn.

4. Accelerate hard, but balance the throttle to maintain the drift.

5. When you feel the vehicle’s rear end kicking out, immediately countersteer the wheels to face straight with the road. Your vehicle will pull in the direction of the front wheels, as long as the wheels are still moving. Keep on the throttle. If you press the brakes or let off the throttle because your vehicle is in an extremely oversteered condition, you will spin out or leave the road.

6. When you wish to straighten out your car, after completing the drift, let off the throttle smoothly and straighten out the wheels as your vehicle kicks in line behind the front tires.

Sorry, had to cut and paste that. I know it belongs in the fast and the furious movie thread but.....

Well, either that or we can just go slowly through the S so as not to miss the turn.

The turn itself looks like an uphill driveway. I did not notice a road sign there.

Also, there are straightaways that will make you want to stomp the pedal, but the rough road prevents you from going above 40.

But to make it all worthwhile, just go ahead and look at the section of Spook Hill Rd at Pretty Boy around "Frog Hollow Cove". Seriously, just look at that sh1t and try not to all over yourself.
