This is a completely ignorant question but what is this? It looks to me like a classic drum brake system... please enlighten me if you may.

This is indeed the hand brake assembly inside the rear rotor

Ah... I am used to years of only working on Saabs... the Japs truely make well thought out cars (well other than Toyota's failing to stop =P )
