Nope.......just wrapped the empty plugs in plastic to prevent water getting in. I also bought gutter leaf guard at the big box store, (it's steel dipped in plastic, still looks good after years) to dress the empty holes. ( Cut to shape, and Installed from behind the facia with JB Weld. )

As long as you can maintain good pressure and flow, you should be OK. The new synthetics are sooooo much better than the petroleum-based lubes I grew up with. Heck, even dino oil is a lot better now....

I like removing the whole cover for additional inspection of other things & to clean out any trapped debris.
