My local guy and buddy is JTranz off Veterans Memorial on the north side of Houston.

I'm using the paper mache as a base for me to fiberglass over. It will be the base. I will then position the gauges where I want them ans then build a cover around that.

update on the gauge project. I rushed the job and took the paper mache out before it dried completely. I set it in the oven at 200 deg. to finish drying it but it warped a little out of shape.. doh!! anyhoo, that was one of the problems. The other problem is uneven and too thick of paper mache in the overlapping area. It's just too thick of paper wads and I'm scared that it will de-laminate over time. The only thing holding it together is water and flour paste. Lesson learned. It did not take lots of effort nor cost a lot so, I started on a new one around lunch. This time, I think I will brush one layer of fiberglass resin on the top of the paper mache once it dries. I will then remove the whole thing after the resin sets.

Some pics of the old one.

I was playing D3 making a Zon late last night. I just woke up and fiddle with the project for a bit. This 2nd round came out nice. The bottom layer of foil was pulled off and the whole thing placed back into the car to dry out the bottom.

Flashback to last night; the top layer way dry so I went and glassed it 1 layer while in car. A single layer of resin was brushed on the piece and allowed to dry. Once dry or close to it (I got antsy and fiddle with it when it was bearly tacky. It worked out great as the tackyness held the fiberglass mat in place).

I also took the time to prep the 2 gauges for resin and glassing. I wrapped both EBC and AFR in food film wrap and then added a few layers of paper to build clearance. I then Foil wrapped everything and put a final layer of card stock I had around.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psy6nqs5xx.jpg

Here she is with the top dried.

This is a pic of the piece after a fresh layer of glass.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psp1fhhiyt.jpg

Also dried.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psks7mxq6r.jpg

Foil taken off. It looks good. It is a lot cleaner and thinner than the first one. 2 layers of paper mache.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psdmsy6fzm.jpg

This is the underside with the foil peeled off. It's still a little damp so I set in back in place and will let it dry some more.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psngyg7est.jpg.

Final picture for now comparing the first piece against the 2nd.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps04e9arlg.jpg

I will fiddle with her later. I will probably only be glassing the bottom and the 2 gauges. I have a Quiz to take and plan to hit the local 1/8 mi track just for kicks again tonight so I need to get moving on that quiz.

Dude!! Come!! I plan to be there a little after they open at 7pm.. don't feel like driving to Baytown and only getting 3 runs. At the 1/8mi, I get a dozen runs! Then we going for a few drinks after.. then head home to drink more.

Stupid sky! It's cloudy but open. No rain but I hear thunder. WTH!

Anyhoo, I been messing with the project again. I got tired of waiting for the paper to dry so I sprayed the thing with the hose and peeled all the paper off!. I had to use an assortment of tools, screw driver, wire wheel, and cut off wheel. It's in a rough cut. I didn't like the little fiberglass strands poking me so I cut and cleaned up the edge. I now have to wait till it dries before I can glass the underside to add more rigidity. and glass the gauges.

Some more pics of the progress.

Making a modular gauge and EBC pod/mount thing. I needed something to be able to mount the AFR and EBC on to w/out butchering up my interior.

Where is the 1/8th mile track?

YzGyz 09-18-2015 06:15 PM

Directions | Houston Motorsports Park

It's not that great but still fun because I usually get a dozen to more runs in. I just want to stomp the gas.

Last night's track day was fun. Won some and lost some. 1/8th mile leave little room for error on the launch. I don't get a chance to catch up at the back end since it's so short. I got about 8 or 9 runs in. Best time was like 8.59sec and 60" of something like 2.1 or something like that.

Anyhoo, I woke up a little early today and tinkered with the current project again. I tossed the old stuff that wrapped the EBC and AFR. I went out to HD and bought a pipe. It fits almost perfect. I had to scrape away the inside rib to allow the AFR to slide all the way through. You an sand it down but it takes forever. IF your using a electric sander of some kind, if you go too fast, it melts and you end up with a blob to sand down.

I then cut slits on the side so I can slide my mounting plate through.

A week ago, I had built a long rectangle out of card stock that was a little bigger than the EBC. I tried my best to support the inside of the rectangle so that it would retain it's shape during glassing. I did ok I guess. I was lady and glassed the whole thing at once. It almost became a fail!. I the gresin and glass is too heavy and not tacky enough to stay on the paper rectangle. I ended up shoring the outside up with more cardstock to keep the glassing form sloping off and deforming. You can see in the pic how it tuned out. I have a few spots missing of resin or holes but I will fix that with some body filler.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psonr9d0ht.jpg

Here is a quick layout of how things will sit. Some of the OEM gauges will be a little blocked and harder to read but I could not get thigns to fit closer. The AFR and EBC require room in the back for wires and vacuum line (vacuum cant have kinks or anything).
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps95sunwoz.jpg

Anyhoo, I'm having a break for not. It's too not outside to tinker. I might work on it more later. I might not.

YzGyz

YzGyz 09-19-2015 04:04 PM

Ops, I forgot to post about the AFR mount bar thing. So I used the scrap piece of fiberglass that I cut form the back of the rectangle box I made for the EBC. I made trimmed the plate to fit snugly into the slit that I cut into the side of the coupling. I eyeball cut space for the wires so the AFR gauge could but up against the coupling.

Once that wire part and out of the way, I used the grease/toothpaste trick to get an estimate of where to drill the holes for the mounting nuts. You just dab a little bit of grease or toothpaste on the end of the mounting screw while they are secured in place. You then carefully lay the unit into the surface you plan to drill or cut and then lift off. The grease/toothpaste will leave its mark on the surface. This is where you cut or drill. The toothpaste was hard to see so I put 2 small dots for you to see.

I'm fairly consistently running 13.3x int he 1/4 mile now. I'm really thinking the tires are majorly holding me back from better times. Maybe I'll get stickier tires along with 305 next time. Not sure what tire to get as I dd my car year round.

As for the pod project, it's on hold. I need a chop saw to make clean cuts on the pipe before I integrate it into the new piece. The other project (with some help) is trying to get the OEM crash bar to fit back in place.

It was an awesome night at the track. When I got there, it only had like 10 cars running until 10pm!! Then it picked up to about 20 cars!! I was going back to back to back until my temp slowly crept up to 220 then I parked it some to cool it off. I did this twice and on the third time out, my check engine light pop back on!! Like WTF really!! A empty 1/4 mile and check engine light popped on!! One of the dudes at the track had a ODB +Torque and it read that my O2 was messed up again. I think it's dirty again.. I'm gonna clean it in the AM and see if that fixes it. If not, I'll have to order a new one.

Some new toys came in, RJM clutch pedal and Random Orbital multi speed polisher.

comes in nice box very well packaged.
Ryan kept me updated via e-mails on pedal progress. A+ on that end. He emailed me on received $ transfer, again when he started assembly of the pedal, again when it shipped!

It came very well packaged. Each part of the pedal was separately wrapped. The Parts of the pedal were per-greased and in a large zip lock bag to keep other parts from getting greased up. I have to wait for a nice non raining day to get this thing installed. I really hope it makes the driving experiences a lot better and allow a better launch.

What a struggle to put that pedal in! It's not a hard install, just a tight spot to work. Anyhoo, I made a install vid. I gave the car a test run around the block. It's a lot easier to drive now. Pedal works nicely. I'm also better able to slip the clutch. I need to try this pedal at the track to see if it helps with my 60'. however, I'm going to wait until I find me some drag radials first. I have it set at 80% (full 10 turns lefts to lock, then 2 turns right - 80%).

I have drove some miles with the RJM clutch pedal and wow!! It's nice! The Specialty Z 6 puck was hard to drive with. On a scale of 1-10, it was a 10. Every person that has tried to drive my car has stalled at least once. This includes people that have had 1000'so far mile driving a manual and cars with decent power. It was just about impossible to ride the clutch prior to the RJM. Now, I can ride the clutch and have way smoother shifts. Shifting is now a 4/10 so imo it's awesome. I just need to try it out at the track and see if it helps with my launch. However it will be an unfair comparison because my new SPL camber arms and SPC toe bolts cane it. I also plan to get a set of NT05R shoot for mid 11's. I won't be installing anything for a while though.

It's been a little busy cleaning and the new years coming and all (Lunar New Year, TET). I have a new cool toy coming in a few days. I have been cleaning the garage out making space. It is not an easy task. I finally got back to the gauge pod build. It's almost done.

things I would change if I were to do it all over.

1-foget the paper mache. I though and found an easier way, plaster! I kept and used my old fiberglass thing I made because it was still good and fit alright but I could of had a lot easier of a time making it. Plaster could be bought at the local hardware store for like $9 a big bag. So you just have to tape or plug up holes and deep crevasses, mix up the plaster and pour it in. Let it dry and pull the mold out. You can then flip that mold over, make a hard boarder for it out of cardboard, put something as a release agent over the original plaster and then pour new plaster over the old to make a copy of the dash.

2-buy good sandpaper and tools to hold/use it. I bough cheap crap paper and after a few strokes, it no longer sands.

3-buy a set of cheap files. They make rough sanding things a lot faster and easier.

Anyhow, here are some pics of the progress. It's basically done.

I use the plaster to make a mold to know where to put things.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psxpwrrjaw.jpg
th thin part in the middle cracked and broke but that's ok. It served its purpose. I used 1 side of the plaster piece to hold the pipe int he correct position as I made a pvc piece to hold the pipe in place on the other side.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psgdan5cw4.jpg

I skipped through a lot of the build process because I was thinking how to accomplish certain things and looks of the pod and forgot to take pics. I built a total of 4 different pod brackets to hold the gauges. That took a whole lot of time and that is also a reason why I didn't have build pics in between. I was just frustrated on how the thing looked and would start all over again.

Anyhoo, she is almost done. I had sanded her down super smooth thinking I was going to spray a layer of primer, black, and clear coat over her and be done. I decided to add texture to her so I googles around and found that they ahve rattle cans of texture stuff. The hardware store has a selection of looks in different colors. That have a Hammered metal look, glow in the dark spray, matted, stone type, and many more. I picked the stone type.

Here a picture of the pod waiting for a clear coat. She was sprayed with first the primer (I got the black primer), then the Stone spray (spray this stuff at a good 12'' distance. This stuff sprays too much otherwise. It is such a friggin cool product!), then black primer again. Next up is the clear. If it's too shiny, I will pick up a matted clear and spray it over the gloss one.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps7ge8kz3a.jpg

I'll post up the thing once finished and installed in the car later today.

Edit: Here it is in the car. It looks lice from the front. The top down view is ehh from the wires. There is no way to hide the wires w/o ruining my instrument cover thing. I don't want to do that plus I'm sitting hte the driver's seat so who cares, lol.

I now have 1 big problem and 1 minor problem left.

BIG: I need to figure out how to use the EBC. I had it installed, Johnny tuned it with the EBC running and all the good stuff. I just don't know how to use it. I don't want accidentally over boost it and BOOM!

Minor: The pods are attached to the dash with heavy duty locking velcro. The darn velcro glue backing wont stick the the dash too well. It will stay in place fine. It will even withstand a light tug. I want it to stick STRONGLY enough to hold a a decent tug without ruining my dash. Anyone know of a adhesive or glue that can stick to the dash really well but wont mess it up?

YzGyz

jwick 02-04-2016 04:22 PM

Major problem answer - throw Johnny a six pack of beer to explain how to use the EBC. Mines easy turn on for full boost turn off for low boost and change map.

Minor problem - I got nothing but can offer a few things if you finally decide you want it to be permanent.

And the new toy is home! So frigging cool! I got this used low rise scissor lift for a really good deal. It weighs a few hundred pounds but a 2x4 to leverage and lift her onto 3 furniture dollies and she moves around the garage beautifully. The hydraulic power unit is labled Rotary. Rotary and Mohawks are really good brands. The lift itself don't don't look like a Rotary but a Bendpak. I have not really taken a good look at it all around other than to check that it lifts and work correctly and wear and tear. These things can be had for around $550 used if you find one. I got it cheaper than that but I got lucky. She plugs into the 110 wall socket and she is ready to lift. Never again will have have to "stock pile project" to do them all at once. I hated lifting the car and setting jack stands. Now, I just drive over the 2x10 ramps, turn engine off, e-break, set lift block, and press the button and up she goes! So very cool!

We use the Shelby to position the lift int he garage as that is the longest and biggest car we have.
