Dallasz - I just stumbled onto your journal.

Fantastic job on the mods, and incredible pictures!

Keep up the journal; it's a great read.

Thanks for taking the time to post everything.

Thank you. I definitely try to include as much text as possible to accompany the photos, and I'm really trying to keep a clean look instead of going overboard on the mods, even though some would say I've already crossed that boundary.

I will continue posting as more mods are done to the car and cant wait to post a 6 month anniversary update which I will probably take a lot of time on. At the moment I've owned the Z since June so still under 5 months.

Skeeterbop 11-06-2011 03:37 PM

I would say possibly overboard, but definitely very clean. None of the add-ons draws attention to itself, they compliment each other and makes for a sweet looking Z

Thank you. It's funny that you use the word "add-ons" because out of all my mods, I feel the rear add ons are the most "out of place" in that I was wanting to wait on installing them until I got the rear diffuser and put them on together so that the Carbon Fiber flows all the way around the car. But at the moment when viewing the car from the rear, there is definitely a void to be filled. It looks like those were just thrown on, and are kind of bulky on the corners, but once the diffuser is on it will look perfect!

Dallaz 11-06-2011 03:57 PM

"Overboard" I feel, is just in the eye of the beholder. I consider certain bumpers, and single additions to be overboard just by themselves.

kensnismo 11-06-2011 04:55 PM

Dallaz,Nice meeting you and the others Sat. morning. It was cold! still a great turn out.if you get a chance PM me the name of the led company.Car looked great and people noticed.maybe next month.

Skeeterbop 11-06-2011 04:58 PM

Only time I think something is overboard, is if a piece draws attention to itself and away from the rest of the car, which judging by your pictures this is not the case imo.

Dallaz 11-06-2011 05:55 PM

^^ thanks for the compliment

New Update!!! Old News.......

Hey guys I never posted how I blacked out my side blinkers so why not now. This was a very simple mod and it looks so good!

Ok so Removal:
I didnt take any pictures of removal but it is VERY straight forward. All you have to do is pull on the blinker towards the back of the car and then pull outwards and it pops right out. then disconnect the wire from the blinker with a simple pinch and you will want to tape the wire to the car because it wants to pull itself inside the fender. There was quite a bit of dust around the circle area that the blinker covers so I went ahead and cleaned that before reinstalling them. I forget where I found this but here is a diagram showing how to remove it. This is a screenshot from my iPhone, so it's not the best.

http://images.us.viewbook.com/63f18e...ecba_large.jpg

Ok so then I took everything inside and got to work. First things first, I used 3M masking tape (suppose any will do though), Krylon Fusion spray paint (gloss black), Krylon clear coat (spray can as well), a razor (the thin one in the pic is a good choice since you will be making precision cuts), paper towel (to wrap the back side of the blinker to avoid overspray on the wiring harness dealy wop).... I think thats it. All Items on this list can be purchased at walmart. The one thing I didnt do was use a primer but its coming up on 4 months and the paint is holding up great, and not much debris will hit the sides while driving so there is less chance of chips in the paint anyway.

The first step is to clean the blinker to get any dirt, dust, etc that may keep the paint from sticking well, off of the area that you will be painting. I may have used rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover or something... I forget.

Then tape off the blinker. I applied one strip at a time and pressed it into the creases (blinkers edge, and around the Z emblem) using my finger nails as I applied each strip. Then comes the Razor. I started by cutting the tape around the edge and working on the Z part afterwards.

http://images.us.viewbook.com/0cf01f...c9c5_large.jpg

Then cut out the Z. just take your time, this is very simple but it would be easy to rush and accidentally slice the edge of the Z which would leave a scratch mark that would show through the paint afterwards. By the way I did no sanding on these.

http://images.us.viewbook.com/d23d07...6feb_large.jpg

Next it's time to paint! I didnt take any photos of the process but I just took all of the stuff out to the patio and had a bunch of newspaper layed out and propped the blinkers upright using one of my dogs toys and a powerade bottle that I chopped the top off of (basically the first 2 things I saw, had to use the razor on the bottle though). Then I did 3 base coats of the gloss black and 3 coats of the clear coat, not waiting very long in between because it was very hot out and I figured it would dry quick.

Here is a shot right after painting and brought back inside

Alternate view showing my Genius (lol) paper towel idea

If anyone was curious here's the pup. Her name is Juno and she's right at 2 years now, this shot was taken Halloween 2010. She's a cutie!

http://images.us.viewbook.com/529376...79f9_large.jpg

All thats left after letting them dry is peeling the tape off. I used the razor to get it started and then just pulled it off slowly and when going around the Z I was pulling away from it. The white speckles all over is a combination of the crappy iPhone sensor's sensitivity making the photo look grainy and the clear coat settling on top of the base coat. It says on the can this is normal and that the cloudy appearance goes away shortly, and it did.

^^ Once again I did no sanding, but the slight texture you see on the Z's paint is invisible when viewing from anything past a few inches. Not noticeable what so ever.

last photo as I was taking them back down to install. In this photo you get to see the slight overspray since I did a second rate masking job on the back of these things, but it will never be seen so O'well. One more thing to note is that each blinker has a label so you know which side it goes and you don't have to mark anything. I believe it was just an L and an R on the back of each. And there you have it.

http://images.us.viewbook.com/648f18...d716_large.jpg

just pop the wiring back in the little attachment on the back of the blinkers and put them back in place. Who would have thought more time and effort would be put into a DIY than the actual process itself! Time to get some sleep!

Ain't that the truth! Those things stand out waaaaaay too much now that everything else is blacked out. No worries though they are definitely on my list of things to do.

somatic 11-16-2011 04:57 PM

looking good buddy. i will catch up to you, although you hve a 3 month head start lol

Skeeterbop 11-16-2011 05:48 PM

Looking good as usual! I love that how-to on the side markers. Might give me something to do, I'm wondering how the blacked out/smoked look would work for my car. It looks great on the brighter colors (i.e. blue, yellow, silver, and white)

dAvenue 11-16-2011 07:23 PM

Car looks great. Nice job

Ya if anything I wish I would of had more pictures of the process but...

I'm sure it would look good. Go to home depot and grab some plasti dip and if it doesn't look good installed just peel it off. I'm going to redo my front emblem with plasti dip after watching videos on how easy it is cause it has some small chips here and there.

Do it!

Skeeterbop 11-16-2011 08:53 PM

So the plastidip will peel off if i don't like it? I may try that out this weekend

Yes. Just get it started with a tooth pick and it peels right off in one piece. Amazing stuff.

Skeeterbop 11-23-2011 10:01 PM

About to go black out my side markers like you did with a slight twist. Going to use plastidip to see how I like it and if i think it looks good I'll go back with the paint like you did.

Skeeterbop 11-23-2011 10:02 PM

oh and using the plasti dip isn't the twist, pics to follow in my thread later.

Haha I'm assuming your just going to black out the "Z". Or the edge, one or the other.

Skeeterbop 11-24-2011 12:44 AM

Yep, going to try doing the nissan logo the same way as well tomorrow.

Skeeterbop 11-24-2011 12:45 AM

It'll be blacked out except for a small band of chrome showing around each letter.

Thanks. I should be adding to this page a lot with more mods after Christmas.... Can't wait

Nice black out on the side blinkers. When are going to black out the eyes? Like your friend fousnismo (not sure if I got that screen name right) but the guy you mentioned earlier with the shorty tips. His looks good. I may be temped to start blacking out stuff...but one thing at a time...first is the overlay black roof. That's if the The Bat ever sends me a sample of his material. Did you mention if your shop that did your overlay would sell the material alone?

Thanks. I'm not sure when I'll do the headlights, I really haven't even driven it but a time or 2 in the past month because I'm being lazy on ordering the stuff for a self oil change.

His username is FlushNismo, and I agree, his Z looks great!

I'm not sure if the shop I got it done at would sell the vinyl or not, but it's SkinzWraps in Dallas if you wanted to call and check.

ZForce 11-25-2011 10:36 PM

^Cool, thanks for the contact info. Yeh, I am looking at some ramps that onzedge purchased locally for about $40 then a hill billy mod with some 2x4's. Suppose I should look into a better jack (low boy type) and something that will not damage the underside. What are you looking at?

Dallaz 11-25-2011 11:10 PM

I was looking at ramps, but even with that 2 by 4 mod on those short ramps I'm sure mine would scrape, and the alternative is longer ramps with less of an angle but they are more expensive.

ZForce 11-26-2011 12:09 AM

Oh...forgot you are lowered and have a lip. The price for a good stance.

Dallaz 11-26-2011 12:38 AM

Haha thanks. Actually I'm not lowered yet but the wheels are fairly flush as is, I still plan on coils though.

Yeah unless the ramps are 37 feet long I will scrape lol. stacked 2x4s FTW. :p

Wait wait wait, hold up! So your saying that the 2 by 4 thing works at your height. Maybe I just don't understand exactly how to set it up. If you or anyone else has a photo please share!

Okay what I do is stack like 1 foot 2x4s one after another progressively getting taller. once I'm on 3 I'm able to get my jack under the side of the car. I don't use ramps.. but It's very easy to buy some cheap ones and slide them under the wheels just to be safe after you lift each side.
