1/3/2010!!

Last few days I started modding the Z, even though they were very small mods. My goal is to have the car Track-Ready by Spring time. Here are some pics of the progress:

1. TWM Type R 440g shift knob with the engraving. At 130 bux incl shipping it was pricey but it makes shifting a complete blast and takes away some of the shifter vibrations as well. Installing this thing was a major pita but well worth it.

As you can see it shortens the overall length of the shifter by about an inch which helps with the improved overall feel.

2. Dynamat!!
The road noise on the Z is quiet compared to my S but when I drive this thing to work sometimes and have to carry clients who drive 100k+ luxo cruisers, I need to make sure they're not raising their voice just to talk to me. Best 17 bux i've ever spent. I made the mistake of buying only 1 pack which was not enough but you get the idea of what i'm trying to do. I will order another pack and finish the trunk very soon. This drastically reduced the road noise and I am certain that doing the entire trunk will improve it even more. Very satisfied.

3. Tint.
Cali is anal with having front windows tinted, and cops seem to spot my car from a mile away so i decided to go with a lighter shade in the front. Surprisingly the two different shades blend in well and doesn't create as big of a contrast that i thought it would. 100 bux with lifetime warranty for all 5 windows and they did an EXCELLENT job!!!

Sorry the car is super dirty.

Next mods are: Modshack's oil cooler, FI exhaust, Redline engine oil, Sway bar, new diff & tranny fluid (havent decided on which ones yet). I'll try a few track events with those mods and see where i need to go from there. Thanks for looking!!

That shift knob is beautiful. As a side note you may want to look into torso shortening surgery.

Just looking at some of your past cars...good choices. I've owned two S2000s, buddy borrowed and wrecked one of them. Also owned the exact same SL550 I bought from Fletcher Jones but a 1600 lease payment grew old and the damn thing was a bit of a tank for turns. Nice comfortable ride though.

Come to think about it, I've had just about every car but that S2000 was pretty fun, couldnt stand the bottom end, horrible Torque so it felt like a Civic around town but that 9000 rev was sweet.

Good luck with the Z man, its like a virus though, start the mods and you can't quit! Thankfully I'm out of ideas so now I'm onto the '67 fairlady project. Can't wait for Superchargers but I MAY have a awesome hook up on Turbo's that may prove pretty reasonably priced..fingers crossed!

Z looks so nice in black by the way.

Haha wow never met anyone with the same combo of cars before. You know i still really miss that S sometimes. There is nothing like top down on a cool summer night and revving that gnarly little motor to the stratosphere while shifting that work of art tranny. The rawness doesn't get any better than that unless you get a Lotus. The benz for a 100k car is garbage i agree. It looks nice and clients always like working with "wealthy" people so it does its job well. Gluck with the Z and hurry up with you paintjob photoshoot already!!! hahaha

Tbone, are you happier with your Z than your S? Used to have an S, and now considering the Z. Just trying to get feed back.

It's funny you ask that because for about 2 months after i bought the Z, i went into some sort of a withdrawal where i regretted selling the S for the Z. If you've ever watched the top gear episode where Rich Hammond compares the boxter s vs m coupe, i'd say that's a carbon copy of how the situation goes. Both cars offer different things. You have to know going into the Z that it's not designed to behave like the s. Not better, not worse. Just different. Overall, i've come to appreciate the z much more than before and am now at a point where i would never go back to the s even if i could.

What i miss about the s: one of the best trannies ever made, drop top, 8 or 9k revs, the nimbleness, the connected feeling to the road, the raw nature and feel, light weight, etc. What i love about the z: POWERRRRRR, rock solid chassis, amentities (S had none literally), the vq, torque, much much easier to drive fast than the s (no snap oversteer like the s), more refined everything, comparable handling to the s, etc.

I'm sure you'll be happy with the z, but make sure you understand what the purpose of this car is. Then you'll be the happiest camper ever. Gluck!
