Your brain is about 10 steps ahead of your hands. You're thinking ahead and not thinking on what you're doing. :icon14: Been there, done that. Bought the tee shirt.

IG @gbrettin:
Screw the putty wanna be JB weld. I literally touched the stuff and the tab fell off. The good news is that it looks like it can be welded after I cleaned the compressor and opened it. If that goes sideways... Then I'll be getting a new AC compressor. Annoyed still, but working through it.

-----------------

TBH, I'm glad it fell off. I was doing a compromised solution. The compressor is prepped and ready for my buddy to do a weld.

How is he going to weld it? MIG or TIG?

That bore next to the weld area might get a little out of shape if you get too much heat in that area. I would measure that bore in 2 directions, 90 degrees apart. Take a before and after measurements.

My buddy is going to TIG and he literally said all the same concerns. He mentioned using a small diameter filler rod, having water to quench and put a lot of heat into the broken tab as opposed to the base unit.

I look at it this way. If it works... great. if not.. I found new units for 200. The compressor will definitely be welded so I can proceed with turbo mock.

A bump in the road.

I have some good news aside from that. My buddy that has the race car is upgrading his fuel system to handle 2k+ hp. He's going to give me a screaming deal on his -8 fuel, -8 to -6 y blocks and other AN lines. SO that alone will save me a lot of money.

gbrettin 03-08-2020 01:30 PM

IG @gbrettin:
Put 220# injectors in. Attempted to tie the Holley rails in with the hardware provided. Apparently Holley expected taller injectors because the fuel rail did not work with the braces provided. I'll need to cut the hardware down and drill holes. What else is new. Also, @independenteng came out and is figuring out how to make my custom pan. The flange he cut fits nearly perfect. We had a brief discussion about making a tubular k-member. Anyone interested in a group buy? No, I don't have pricing...yet. Just a quick gauge of interest

I was gonna mount my transmission today... But these guys showed up late to the party. (ARP Bolts)

---------------

Lessons learned - Injectors are a bitch to put in if you push straight down. They don't like that. What they do like is a little twist motion while pressing in and the go right in. 7 injectors went in faster than it took for the first injector. lol

I'm tossing around the idea of working with my buddy to make a tubular front k-member out of chromoly. Hell, maybe I'll get fancy and go for titanium. lol . I posted a feeler on FB and didn't really get much of a response because there's no weight comparison, which would be the main reason for VQ people to swap. I'll probably have to pony up and do it myself and have something concrete before people would even have the slightest interest. I don't blame people either for having a meh attitude either. OE k-member is pretty damn light from what I heard, 30-40lbs.

First thing is first, he is finishing my custom pan.

Last couple pictures show the fuel rails fitting in nice. Notice the tight fit with the injectors and valve cover breathers. Looks like I will have to clock the back two inward.

My fuel pressure regulator is off getting bead blasted and anodized black, yes I know they have black ones; but I'm using what I have. The lines coming off the fuel rails will get cut in half and connected into the FPR. The return line will shoot directly back, nice and clean.

Unfortunately I have to stop all build activities for a week or so because I have a major certification looming. ... I actually should be studying for that right now...

Oh, for sure. Ti would be done WAY down the road... if at all. I was thinking out loud how to get weight down and keep it strong. It's crazy expensive:

Ti wouldn't be the best material for that application anyway. If you never welded TI. Stay away from it.

Come on man, you've seen my welds. :roflpuke2: That would 100% be done by a pro.

I have a hookup on chromoly and can get it cheap. Like I said, one sh1t show at a time. My car needs to roll under its own power before that happens. My buddy Dave wants to put a cage in my car. We both have serious safety concerns at high power levels. Next winter all that can happen. I also am going to pursue a rear cantilever suspension.

All these great / terrible ideas . That's what you get when you mix crazy with a sprinkle ADD I guess. :rofl2::icon17:

Hey ya'll... I'm back. Passed my certification test and now can go full retard on my build again. I'm a proud member of the GCFA club.

IG @gbrettin (again, because I'm too lazy to type.)

Fuel rail bracket mounts need to be changed due to injectors being smaller.

(day pass)
Bent some custom mounts, they work pretty good. Lots of pulling on and off of the fuel rail. Lost a bolt in the crevice of the head. Looks like I'm pulling the intake. What ever. I needed to put thread seal on the steam vent anyway.

(day pass.. or so)
Retrieved lost but and lock washer. Wrapped up custom fuel rail brace, perfect. Put the intake on and found that I didn't tighten the rail bolts to the intake. Attempted to take off the intake again and broke bolts off in the head. FACKKKKKKKKK. My buddy was kind enough to let me know 89 inch pounds is what it called for. Clearly I did more.

(Day passed with irritation)

--------------------------------

I shifted gears to work on a carbon fiber hood and carbon fiber cowl. I was going to take a different route for my hood but apparently there is some synergy between my needs and people that have Whipple chargers. I made no promises to Mike but I'm not one to shy away from a challenge. Worst case scenario is that I don't make anything. Best case scenario is I make a limited run. We'll see.

What I can say about mold making process is that it's very time intensive. Good thing I'm on that Covid-19 extra time.

Waxed and buffed the hood one more time. Laid down two coats of PVA (liquid plastic). Put down a TON of gel coat. Started to lay in fiberglass but I ran out of MKEP. I'll need to buy more fiberglass and MKEP (hardner) so that the gel coat can completely cure. The gel coat will never fully harden with out a top coat of epoxy. Honestly, I might be a good thing I ran out of MKEP, because I think the gel coat was a bit thick. It will have time to dry off a bit. This mold will probably not be dry for a 1 week minimum. I suspect it will be closer to two weeks because it's still cold in MI and the shop doesn't get that warm. I'll bring a torpedo heater in later to ensure some heat makes it into the mold.

New supplies are on their way to make a plug for the cowl. That's gonna take me a lot of time to make so the timing works out.

When I worked for Champion Chassis. First floor, we built racing chassis's. 2nd floor, they made fiber glass body parts. They had a couple of different types of chopper guns. Made quick work of doing fiber glass.

gbrettin 03-26-2020 03:42 PM

Finished the first layer of fiberglass. It's not bad, not great. I have a few ideas I'll do different the next go around. I put in a large order to get additional supplies. I spoke with Elmo (group member name not sure if he wants me to use real name) and he said he would like a dual cooling plate that he can use on the track. I'm going to attempt to make a twin 2" cooling plate. I have an idea on how that will work so you will see some stuff come up in the future for that.

Coming up in the next few days, I should be able to get started in on making the cowl plug for the hood. The plug should be pretty fun to make. Hmmmm, I should probably make a couple plug designs... ya know... just incase one goes to sh1t.

As for the fiberglass below... I'm gonna cut out some of the air pockets and put in a TON of fiberglass this next go (hence my large order).

I feel like a lunatic doing this stuff, but I figure if I don't give it a try I will regret not doing it. Plus it's pretty fun, minus the crazy chemical stench all this puts off. My buddy wasn't too crazy about the chemical smell in the shop the next day.

From IG @gbrettin:
Ground out air pockets, quite bad in a lot of areas. Lots of lessons were learned and not a waste of time. Probably would start over if more materials were here. When I pop the mold I'm certain there will be additional issues. Based off that I will make the decision for a go/no go.

I have more supplies to build up additional layers on the way. Also, I hit my hands a few times with the grinder... Didn't think anyone wanted to see bloody hands. lol

A couple days ago I mixed up some more tooling gel and filled in areas that were ground out. That completely hardened and I set in on getting some ideas for a cowl. Ideally I would do mock up on the hood when it's released from the mold; but hey, I've got a little time to kill right now.

After going through some of the required dimensions, all I can say is wow... the Whipple charger sticks out of the hood like a mountain. I guess anyone that decides to go with an LS swap and uses a high ram could use the cowl too.

gbrettin 04-02-2020 10:32 AM

IG @gbrettin:
So close to being done. Need a bit more tooling resin for the fiberglass. Next time I'll add some reinforcement via the used fiberglass rolls.

------------------

I got a boat load more supplies and what I thought was enough tooling epoxy resin (expensive and gets ultra-hard) for fiberglass. I used two gallons of resin on this last pass. I added three additional layers in the center section of the hood and two on the flange. The outer flange needs more but I think the center is pretty darn strong. I think total support is at 6 layers inner and 3 on outer (sides of hood not the front and back of flange).

For the hood and cowl, heavy duty carbon fiber and a lighter weave was received from Composite Envisions. I have carbon kevlar for an outer layer... but I really don't want black and yellow on my hood. I need to get a few yards of silver and carbon.

With the scraps from the hood and cowl, I plan on using that for a wet layup + vacuum for Elijah/Elmo’s twin brake cooler. That will keep things simple that way, as opposed to doing vacuum infusion. But why does he need a twin cooler you might ask? From conversations with him, he said that a single 2.5 cooler isn’t cutting it on the track. I was shocked to hear that… but I’ve never tracked my car. *shrug*

The G8, which has been the bunk mate of my Z, has just been wrapped up. The car put down CRAZY numbers on low boost, to the tune where we were all scratching our heads. The owners of AutoDynamix have a fire under their a$$ to make my car’s turbo plumbing. I’m not gonna stop that train. Sooooo now it looks like I will bounce between turbo plumbing and composite build. I’m ok with that. Composite mold making takes tons of time and then there is a ton of wait time. This should balance out nicely.

I was asked not to post final numbers for the G8 on low boost due to potential grudge races. High boost is going to be quite ridiculous.

Enjoy!

IG @gbrettin:

One exhaust manifold repaired and the other was shaved to the correct angle. Fuel rail brackets fixed, bent them more and tightened down. Dual plenum fastened back down. Turbo mount bar bent (after I mounted the bender to the work bench).

------------------------------

Some stuff not mentioned on IG: The dual plenum has 4 bolts in it right now. Threads were chased prior to putting the plenum on and the bolts went in nice. Also, putting the plenum on is definitely a two person job and my buddy said he can understand why I stripped it out wrestling that floppy donkey d1ck around. The wood in the plenum is to stop the plenum half flopping over while I try getting the fuel rail hardware bent and fastened down. The plenum itself is two separate halves which makes it very annoying. Don't get me wrong, I love it when it's bolted down... I'd prefer to have something like the Carbon XR... but that's 5g and for an LS7 head.

Also, while wrestling the fuel rails on and off 50x times I managed to slice a few of the O rings on the injectors. On the final assembly of the fuel rail I put fresh o-rings on.

Down the road I am going to put a fire suppression system into the car. 2,500 is a lot until your on the side of a track/road watching your car burn down... Not to mention the insurance company would be likely to fight you. Bare minimum, I will have a large fire extinguisher available until the suppression system is installed.

From IG @gbrettin:
Turbo mount plates cut, drilled, cut and flapper sanded. Lined up the holes using a couple dots of transmission goop and a ruler. Bent bar can be welded to the plates and then to the Maven mounts.

Turbo/crash bar attached to Maven mounts. Street Carr Fabrication flange attached. Dave Diehl, @autodynamix , did some boss welding. Air to water intercoolers will be mounted on the ... Turbo/crash bar... So I guess it's a Turbo/crash/intercooler/misc bar. Things are moving!

Everyone is trying to get me to plan some spring/early summer meetup. I was thinking maybe having a meetup at my house and cruise our way down that way. Maybe get some guys to spend some cash on a dyno run or two at the shop. Brainstorm a bit and let me know if you have any ideas. I know the yahoos read this thread too, so maybe theyll chime in.

gbrettin 04-05-2020 12:19 PM

Sounds like a good idea to me! There's another performance shop down the road, Strictly Performance. Maybe I can talk to them as well. Need to wait until the Covid-19 stuff clears up though.

If I get a head count for people interested in using the dyno, I'm sure I can get you guys on for a few pulls at a cheap rate.

Might have to shoot for mid May..... playing it by ear due to Covid. Not having Zdayz really cleared my schedule.

-- EDIT

If you want to have remote tuning done by someone, that's a possibility too. Options, all the options. What ever is clever guys.

Oh, one more thing! I didn't weld my crash bar... well... I think you guys remember why. I had the pro do it. lol :roflpuke2:

What? You're not a pro welder by now?

:)

I know, shocker right?!? Don't worry I welded some tabs last night. They are functionally sound, but man... everyone is a pro welder apparently telling me how shitty they look.

Speaking of that, I mounted my Intercoolers last night. The piping will be the easiest I've ever seen for a cold side. The tabs I welded will be gone over to make them look nice (even though no one will see them). I had a sense of pride after I took a raw chunk of metal and made it functional.

I ended up cutting some slots in the tab so I can move around the intercooler for a little adjustment. I'm going to add two top support straps that will pull the A2W IC away from the radiator.

A couple people brought up concerns about airflow on the radiator. I'm not terrible worried about that. I can add a spal brushless fan and get a nice Ron Davis radiator later. I'm curious as to what stock will do for now. I'll just make a mental note to watch the temps. Worst case scenario is relocating the radiator to the rear of the car. I'd rather not do that because of additional work at this point and the added cost of AN fittings can easily be 1000 dollars extra.

The first picture shows my harness wiring came in from MS3. I also ordered 8 EGT bungs for my exhaust manifold . Unfortunately the first order got lost in transit so MS3 had to make a claim against the shipping company, which had a bunch of other orders heading to the shop. Someone had a bad day because it was about 8 thousand dollars worth of electronics and wiring. Back to the EGT bungs, my order had the last set of 8 and I'm waiting for another batch. who knows when I will get them.

Main take away. Two tabs had many steps. I was at the shop for hours last night.

Looks great to me!

But I'm not a pro ;)

Wow those tabs look awful, did you have a seizure while welding them??

Kidding, nice job on everything! Great build!

gbrettin 04-07-2020 01:41 PM

One last thing. The drilled whole is not perfectly center where I punched the metal. I was trying to get video of the drill press and it walked the metal plates a tad.... DOH! I guess I'll focus on before and after shots if I'm using machinery. lol

Might as well scrap the build!

Talk about chicken chit welds. Looks like you used bubble gum. :shakes head:

You have to start somewhere. The more you weld. The better you get at it. You just need someone to show you a few methods on how to move the weld puddle to smooth out the weld. You pushing or pulling the puddle? And are you using a steady motion (looks steady to me with a nervous tick), or stop and go? Always practice on a piece of scrap before you weld your parts. Before you weld. Get yourself in a comfortable position. Hands supported. If not. It will show in your welds.

Basically you nailed it, I got nervous. I was going slow then I started moving fast and then slowed down again. I didn't work with the puddle. My pace was messed up.

I was pulling toward me.

I think the welds look 100x better than what I could do. All I can reliable do with a torch is burn holes in something.
