The impact of the Simpsons was huge, though. It was Fox's biggest hit. Without it, we probably wouldn't have South Park, Family Guy, and a slew of other successful adult themed cartoons.

dmhenderson 04-17-2013 09:23 PM

Uh, the simpsons was an animated short off of the Tracy Ulman show (which was terrible). Their original hits were Married with Children, 21 Jump Street, In Living Color, and some Werewolf show. Fox really took off once they got football - which was a huge coup at the time.

That may well be, doesn't mean it doesn't need to be given a good death nevertheless.

Simpsons still have some good episodes from time to time, but they are coming fewer and farther in between these days.

Missed this. Yeah this is accurate. It was "groundbreaking" for the time but then again, so were their other shows.

Honestly I think the dumbest thing they did (and beginning of the downfall of the show) was make a movie. :ugh2:

Uh, I know how they started, and I know that Married was their first hit, but the Simpsons dwarfed it with its success. Did you know that Tracey Ullman tried to sue them for royalties and failed?

No I didn't know that, but WHAT is the flying speed of an unladen swallow? :icon08:

dmhenderson 04-17-2013 09:27 PM

I had a bart simpson shirt at some point when I was a kid. It's 99.99% unfunny at this point but it still makes me chuckle now and then.

Blast from the past! Johnny Depp was so young in 21 Jump Street that he still had fat cheeks!!!

Yeah. Matt Groening owned the rights to the cartoon so she didn't have a leg to stand on.

Married and Living Color were what "launched" fox. Then Rupert Murdoch paid an asston of money for football and they became a major player.

Don't forget the spinoff starring Richard Greico, "Booker".

I didn't say the show isn't long in the tooth and in need of an end, just that it should be appreciated for what it once was

Only because you could actually fantasize about the female characters in the show without being labeled a freak... :bowrofl:

But you're acting like the Simpsons wasn't their cash cow original programming, the show that brought them huge success.

OMFG! The drama! Shannen Doherty was all dramatic, and Luke Perry was so pretty and angsty.

It wasn't? Married and living color + the football contract gave them enough money to AFFORD to make episodes of the simpsons.

Animated prime-time shows hadn't been seen since the flintstones because they were so goddamned expensive to make.

Wow, this is stunning. Love to see proof. It was the biggest show on tv in the 90s, and as noted, it has survived. I wonder why that is, if it was so expensive and carried by all those other shows that died over a decade ago.
