Nah. It's very safe. We routinely shoot 1/2 inch AR500 from 50 yards (sometimes less) with .223/5.56 XM193, and pistols from much closer. Eye protection is important however, as sometimes the bullet's jacket will pop back. We hang the gongs at a slight angle. Rarely an issue.
