IMHO that is frickin' ridiculous. I've got a 1.7 karat ring (it was my grandpa's, my dad's and now mine) on my fat hand and it still looks huge.

A ring that huge is just asking to get rolled.

Here's the thing, if you made $500k~ a year, would you ONLY buy a $10-20k ring? (Using the traditional method he'd have to buy her a $125k ring, so thank god he isn't completely retarded)

So far we've narrowed it down to a 2.7 and a 3.11 karot diamond. $33k~

e: and she wouldn't know i made $500k a year, she'd think i made $50k a year

Makes sense I guess. I'd definitely go far quality as opposed to size when spending that kind of money. I saw a 1.5 karat IF, D color stone about 20 years ago and they were asking $25k at the time. It looked huge because it was so white and literally spotless. Plus it was an emerald cut.

Yeah, I believe that 3.11 was H/I color cut was great, A flourescent, and 33k, the 2.7 was E/G, no fluorescents or ANYTHING and they wanted $36k~

At the end of the day, he can't do a 1.5 carot stone no matter how nice it is because it's just too small for someone with his job to buy (even if it IS $20k), we WERE looking at an even better 2.4, but it looked a bit too small for his liking.

If this is his decision, ok. If that's her opinion and she's going to have a problem with a "too small" diamond he needs to do some serious thinking.

I guess this must be a first wedding? My first wife was very materialistic and I am very glad to be rid of that one! If the future wife would have a problem with the size of any ring he buys her then she is not the right one to begin with. My second wife of 13 years doesn't even have a ring.
