Interesting, sounds like they finally came up with something that should work.

Really tho who hear would pay $350 for it? "I don't run plates on my Z anyway..."

Well... a ticket costs around that amount I suppose. It's kind of cool in a gadget sort of way. Like who really needs a backup camera installed? Back in it's heyday, those things were super expensive. I'm sure the price will cool down within a couple of years.

Red light cams take photos in fractions of a second. I highly doubt the sensor would be able to sense the flash and emit its own light before the photograph was taken. Luckily for me all the red light cameras were taken down in my city.

^ Most Redlight cameras use flash photography. Though the flash works at literally at the speed of light, the camera getting ready to receive the image information doesn't giving the sensor on your car a micro second of time to react and counter act with it's own flash. Hyper exposing the picture.

What about the new cameras that got put in recently? They take high definition video during the day....

Shouldn't you just slow down on red light areas anyway? Reason for these things is to be around is make it safe and lessen red light beaters. At least here in CA you're given heads up and made aware.

Love the video. Props to the guy (or gal) who came up with the idea - very innovative. The unit quickly responds with a flash once it senses the flash photography. The technology behind the quick reaction is very impressive and would like to know the science behind it.

Auto darkening welding masks work on the same principle. The automatic lenses are clear until you strike an arc and darken before the flash can burn your eyes.

Plus they take video so even if you had something to beat the flash they could still get your tag off the video.

Then probably give you another ticket for trying to beat the system. Maybe if you had one of those angled plate covers that can only be seen from straight on.

When I got my red light ticket they had a pic of my plate and video of me going through a yellow that turned red when I was in mid intersection. You could see my plate even in the vid.

Years ago, I used slave flashes in a photo studio setting that were triggered by the main flash popping off. Each slave flash had a little light sensor that detected the main flash firing. So, I believe after more than a decade later, this kind of technology has improved and it's not a stretch to imagine a couple slave flashes built into a license plate frame. I'm all for countermeasures.

The way it always works is that some device i.e. red light camera, is promoted to the tax payers as a boon for "public safety" but in the backroom deals with city council members, it's a different language such as "low capital investment" and "guaranteed revenue stream."

With a few sleazy tweaks of the system such as shortening the yellow-light duration or nailing people who stop and then turn right at a light, pretty soon everyone is a felon behind the wheel. The camera company gets rich, the city gets addicted to the money (especially the city council dirtbags who accepted bribes), insurance companies cash in on raising premiums and the whole cottage industry of remedial driving schools and traffic lawyers get a piece of the action as well.

Anyone who opposes radar or red light cameras is stigmatized as an irresponsible scofflaw who only wants to speed and run red lights. Lies, oops I meant "statistics", are plotted to show how much safe an intersection is now that everyone is being brow beaten.

So word to the wise: whenever you hear "public safety" just replace those words with "easy money" to understand the real intentions.

heres an interesting read, and a possible way to get out of your red-light camera ticket. Photo Radar Scam - Malfunctions of Photo Enforcement Radar and Red Light Cameras
This is something I have been hearing alot about recently.
