My great uncle, when he taught my father, and then when my father taught me, used the biggest handgun my dad could hold and would random up dummy rounds. best range practice ever. afterwards, most other handguns felt graceful and a lot of bad habits happen moving up, not down. granted this is all anecdotal. YMMV

Brilliant! You have sold me...I think I will pick up a S&W .44 Mag and throw a dummy round or two in the cylinder when I go to the range. Would that be "range roulette"? It's not like I need an excuse to buy another handgun nowadays

I guess it is all relative; compared to a .357 Mag or .40 S/W my 1911 feels like a gentle beast. I still want a paper target to "go ahead, make my day"

So I am in the market for a cheap, reliable and compact rifle...which means I am looking for an AK. I have read a lot about 7.62 vs 5.45 and have decided that I am going for the latter.

Is this a dumb idea considering the lesser availability of the ammo? Can anyone recommend a good manufacturer for a civilian version AK-74?

AK-47 (not AK-74) is 7.62mm. AR-15/M4 is 5.56mm (not 5.45). You said you've read a lot about 7.62 vs. 5.56* and that you're going for the latter (which would mean you're going for an AR), but then you ask for a recommendation for an AK rather than an AR. Can you please clarify? lol

My .02?

Do it right and SBR an M4.

Go with 300AAC, suppress it. That gives you a 0.5-1.5 MOA gun that is quieter than an M5-SD with subsonics, offers AK-47 ballistics with superior projectiles and ballistic coefficients in supersonic, and gets a very efficient powder-burn in 8.2" barrels with either flavor. Epic win with no downside.

*However*

I chose 5.56 because I like the flatter trajectory out to 300 yards and it will handle my needs just fine.
