Utah Becomes First State to Honor a State Gun

After participating in the pursuit of famed bandit Pancho Villa in the early 20th century, the Browning M1911 automatic pistol is again making history—becoming the first-ever official firearm of a U.S. state.

In deciding to establish a state firearm, Utah lawmakers settled on the M1911 pistol because its creator, legendary gun maker John Browning, was born and lived a large part of his life in the state. Browning also founded his company in Utah.

The 100-year-old handgun was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1911 and used by an expeditionary force that invaded Mexico five years later to hunt down Villa. It remained standard issue until 1985.

Utah has unusually lenient gun ownership laws, attracting revenue from out-of-state gun owners. Of the 67,000 concealed-weapon permits issued in Utah in 2010, 51,000 were sold to non-residents.

Utah already had 23 other state symbols, including the state vegetable (Spanish sweet onion), state historic vegetable (sugar beet), state rock (coal), state insect (honey bee), state cooking pot (Dutch oven) and state fossil (allosaurus).

In addition to Utah, Arizona also wants to designate a state firearm: the Colt revolver. But that decision has been mired in controversy, coming so close after the Tucson shootings in January that killed six people and seriously wounded U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords.

I'm lucky in that I have a couple of relatives with lots of land, so we just go shoot there.

A few years ago, I went with a friend to shoot clays near my house. All I had was my Glock 17 while everyone else had a shotgun. I decided to try out the Glock and actually hit one clay. Probably the only time I'll ever do something like that.

That would be rather challenging!:tiphat:

Those are already illegal here in California. When ordering them (from 44mag.com) you simply order them as a "repair kit" and viola!, they arrive (disassembled) at your front door, perfectly legal. ;)

I got my Comp-Tac order in today. The MTAC holster is awesome. At 4:00 on the waist it completely disappears, even with the extended grip.

Robert, I know you were wondering about the MTAC magazine pouch... it's pretty cool! I have it at 8:00 right now and it's not bad once I adjusted the mounting points so that the magazine sits higher. From a pure comfort standpoint the holster alone is super comfortable. The pouch is a little less so but not uncomfortable at all.

 Good to hear. I'll more than likely order the mag holster while on R&R.

If you can you should try out different pistols to see which YOU are comfortable with BEFORE you make a purchase. It may be the case that you like the feel of and can shoot/handle both of those well but?

Just curious, why those two?

It can never be too cold and too wet. As a hiker, I have found this is the only kind of weather that drives the tourists, soccer-moms with obnoxious kids, hoopleheads, and bugs out of the woods ha ha. Anyway, where do you live in California? I moved away in 1990. Back then, no one called it Cali. Being into firearms and living there is a challenge.

Inspector71 03-25-2011 07:24 AM

Price?

If you don't mind me asking, is there a substantial price difference? How did you find a SIG 228? I have 3 SIGs and they are all flawless and accurate. I was surprised by how accurate the 239 9x19mm is.

The HK P30L is 1045$ and the SIGs run from 920-1100..
I get around 100-150 dollars off each because I am military.. if I buy on base they are also Tax free.. I agree the SIGs are all amazing. They fire perfectly, they are the right weight, size and shape for my hand...
The thing about the P30L is it's ambidextrous.. and I like that...

m4a1mustang 03-25-2011 08:10 AM

I'm going to try really hard to get out to the range this weekend. I only have 200 rounds through my G26 so far.

Isamu 03-25-2011 08:30 AM

oh, can I come play steve

The ban was actually 86 so the lower you need is going to need to be from pre 86. They can be found but get ready to pay big bucks for it.
