Looking to buy a new welder. I was going to get a Hobart 210 ($999) but Tractor Supply has the Hobart 190 for $699. The only difference to me is the 210 will do 3/8" and the 190 will do 5/16". For a $300 difference, I don't know if that extra 1/16" is going to do anything for me. Anybody have any experience with Hobart?

Morning all! Weekend is just about upon us. Time to change the oil in the Z, and clean the filter.

Actually, I think I'm going to treat myself and double the budget for a Miller 211. It's probably nicer than I deserve, but damnit, I want a Miller. Plus a buddy of mine had a good point that a 120V machine is nicer for doing sheet metal work and the 211 is a dual voltage machine. Always good to be versatile.

120v machines aren't really worth it. Low duty cycle, don't control as well. Get a 230v machine. I have a Lincoln 180 Pro with the wiring kit and gun for aluminum. I can weld just about anything with the right gas. If you can, weld with MIG and gas. Flux core is dirty and the weld isn't as nice. Takes practice to make it look nice. The only upside to flux core is that you don't need gas most of the time.

Miller makes a good machine. Also get a good cart that will hold a gas bottle. If you don't get a good cart. You will be kicking yourself later, and hating the cart.

Gas bottles. I have 3 that I lease for 5 years at a time. CO2 for carbon steel, Tri Mix for stainless steel, and Argon for aluminum. You can buy the bottles out right if you want to. But if the bottle or valve goes bad. You're stuck with it.

The only 2 things that I can't weld. A broken heart and the crack of dawn reps.

Oh definitely. I already weld and have all the above mentioned goodies as well. The only piece in question is the machine itself. I own a Chinese made 120V unit, which has done the job it was originally purchased for, but it is a $300 Chinese made 120V welder.

Now that I'm all grown up and customizing the Ghia, I want a more legit machine (and one with more balls). To quote my neighbor, "I'm at that stage in my life where I'm too old to use cheap tools and drink cheap tequila."

If you're to that point in life. Then you're ready for a 480v machine.

I want a Lincoln or a Miller A/C D/C TIG/stick machine with a water cooled torch.

480 is a spicy meatball. I would love to learn TIG. Maybe now would be the time to invest in one of them multi machines.

I really wish you were closer, I need some **** welded and I’m paranoid about getting it done right.
