I can't tell you the best path, just that my own life has been radically improved (financially) through management. I did pay the price physically with stress at times (and occasionally still do). I consider it worthwhile - I will absolutely trade some level of mental health for a larger paycheck. It's not ideal that I have to make that choice, it's just the reality of life. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.
