Has anyone ever had a fuel pump fail when the tank was empty? Pump went out on a friend's Suburban recently. We considered dropping the tank and changing the pump ourselves until we realized the 40+ gallon tank was about 3/4 full. Decided it was well worth paying a real mechanic to do the job.

I had to change out the pump when the sending unit failed. Same boat, 1/2+ tank of gas. I dont trust myself with electrical and gas.. I supported the local mechanic that day.

You can get a 12volt transfer pump & pump the fuel into an empty 55gal barrel;if you have one of those handy
The transfer pumps are cheap

We thought about doing that but we'd have to buy a pump that would be safe with gas (or siphon it out) and I turned my drum into a plating/de-rusting tank last Summer (full of sodium carbonate solution at the moment). Between the two of us, we probably have enough small gas cans but decided it wasn't worth the trouble. 20-30 years ago, we would have gone ahead with the job but we're both getting old and lazy.

Gotta be careful with that bleeder cap. That's why I like the steel one. It's easy once you've done it a few times and get the feel for it - the key is to make sure you seat the cap fully before turning. The threads on his reservoir are good.

So what I should have done is A. bleed all of the calipers a second time (since the reservoir emptied when we disconnected the first brake line) and B. turned the car on and checked brake pressure while the car was still in the air. It had been a long day and I was just tired; we knew we had time today to finish it up.

Fuel pumps always fail when the tank is over half. It's something 'coded' into the metal of the pump....
