Typical rule of thumb is the employee makes half of that, so that’d be $1,200 for a 12 hr day. There might be some extreme case where you work most of the day but engineers offshore aren’t making $2,000 a day. At least not in the US. Offshore Africa with hazard uplift, maybe.
My wife worked for WPX as an office manager. Almost $200,000 year. My wife seen the payrolls. Wife's cousin's husband in Colorado said he's making $2000 a day on a gas rig. Good friend is a senior engineer for WPX. Said he's north of $2,500 a day. Gas drilling in the north east is paying big bucks.

Maybe a couple isolated locations that happens but that’s not the typical market.

Local kids who got jobs on the drill rigs here are blowing through some money. All the new trucks, cars, bikes, and side by sides, around the neighborhood.

You're in a mature market there. Here, when they first started to drill the Marcellus and now Utica gas field. They had to import skilled people. To do that. They had to raise wages. For a while, if you when out to dinner. It sounded like you was in Texas or Louisiana and it looked like it too. And then the Mexicans came with their restaurants.

That’s very true but that doesn’t last and if it does it’s a market nobody wants to live in. Any sector will overpay when workers aren’t available.

Kids blowing money happens here too. Most of the designers live like the money will never stop coming in. It was sad when the market dropped out. People literally listed their house the same week they got laid off. No savings whatsoever even though they’d been making deep six figures for years.

We had a down turn in 2014. They gave my wife an early retirement package that was worth 2 years pay. Most of the imported skilled people left. Now things are starting to boom again. But there is not enough local skill people to do the work, but the import people are not coming back. For the most part. They don't like the weather. The wages are still staying high.

Like Alaska. They were paying piping designers $90-120/hr with OT to go up there cuz no one wants to deal with that cold. Not to mention the cost of living is ridiculous.

When they started to work on the pipe line up there. I turned down a job up there welding. Went through the interview and welding test with flying colors. Started asking about living conditions and cost of living. I just about fainted. One egg was over a buck, loaf of bead was 10 bucks, gallon of milk was 10 bucks. It would costs a mint to live up there at the time. Plus women was few and far between. STD's was running high too.

When I came out of high school in the mid 70's. You was almost guaranteed a job in either the steel mills or coal mines here. They guys was making just under $100,000 with OT then. New cars, trucks, bikes, boats, guns, drugs, and new houses was the norm. Then in the early 80's, the bottom fell out. The first thing to go was the boat, followed by the bike, truck, guns. When the house went, so did the wife. I seen it repeat over and over so many times. Some of these guys have never recovered. My cousin was one of them. Got into drugs real heavy, and it killed him.

Here, you can have the same job. Live in one of the outer counties like me in Fayette and get paid $10.00 hr. The same job in Pittsburgh would pay $30.00.
A distance of 30 miles.
