The last 15 years when I was working. I maxed out my 401K. Plus maxed out my separate IRA account. I was dumping over $30,000 a year into my retirement fund. Chit adds up fast. Do it if you can afford it. Once you do. You will not miss the money in the budget.

Yup. I started a bit late since it took a few years after college to find a decent place to work that offered these kinds of benefits. So once I was offered a 401k plan, I maxed it out the second I spoke with the rep. Haven't looked back since.

Good call. Started mine late as well, it wasn't even offered at my previous places of employment. I'm up to 10% of my income going in, incrementing up. My employer matches up to 5%, plus provides a bonus yearly (bonus is equivalent to all other cash bonuses I've received which is... a lot of money). I also have a Roth IRA, and HSA set up. It's a lot coming out of my check but fortunately I can do it, and my wife is doing pretty much the same with hers.

Yup. Doing the smart thing. You'll be far better off in the later years. I should look into an IRA. It's on my to-do list still. HSA is chugging along. I just drop $10 in weekly. I should increase that just to be on the safe end since all these fun medical things are now popping up.

Your company sounds way better for benefits. I only get 3% matched. But you become fully vested with the company after being here for 5 years. I only have a year to go, so that is always good. Can take it wherever I go.

I planed for the future.
I put a lot away for retirement.I was ready for early retirement. Then after 35 years of marriage came the divorce.I live in a state where they do not split 50/50.
The judge can decide what is equitable. Then throw 30K of lawyer fees on top of that.
Life goes on.

Same, 5 year vestment. Hmm, if I were you I'd really up that contribution to the HSA unless you've already got a decent amount in there. Up to $3450 can be invested this year, tax free.

I have like $4K in two different simple IRA accounts :ugh:

Thankfully, my ex-wife had about as much in her retirement account as we had equity in the house plus the value of the Z. So I kept the house and Z in exchange for not going after her retirement :D

I'll start contributing to my own retirement account next month with company match.

That BLOWS !!!

Rusty 06-21-2018 06:44 PM

Companies I worked with a 401K.

First company. Elliott TurboMachinery matched 0.35 on a dollar up to 6% gross income. Put the money in quarterly. :(

Second company. Duke Energy. Dollar for dollar up to 6% on gross income. Put in every pay.

Third and last. Dynegy. Dollar for dollar up to 5% on base pay. No overtime or bonuses counted. Put in every pay.:(

With Duke and Dynegy both had a cash balance plan too. It was company paid. Based on your years of service, your age, and how much you made for the month. Duke was the best. Dynegy was based mostly a pre-set scale on your base pay.

I also an IRA account with Primeria. They are giving me 5% on money invested. When I quit Elliot. I rolled that money into my IRA. When the plant got sold to Dynegy. I rolled my Duke 401K into my IRA. And when I retired from Dynegy. I rolled that 401K, and both cash balance plans into my IRA. About 1,200,000. I get a guarantee amount per month for life. Plus if I die. My wife will get the rest for her life and the insurance policy. I have my wife setup the same. But she only gets 4% on her money because she started later.

I need to figure out what I want for a midnight snack.

Thinking of a toasted bagel sammich with honey butter. Couple layers of honey ham, turkey, and hard salami lunch meat with couple of slices of velveeta cheese and mayo. Then nuke it for 35 seconds to melt the cheese. :yum:

Had one the other day and it was good. :yum:

Speaking of long weekends. I'm leaving tomorrow for my Power Wagon meet this weekend. Think of it as ZDayZ but with a lot smaller crowd. And we go off roading at Rausch Creek Off road park. Get there Friday afternoon. Set up camp with the motorhome. Big cook out with camp fire. Saturday. Waking up and make breakfast for everyone. Go offroading. Come back and have cook out and camp fire. Sunday, repeat. Come home Monday.

Spent today getting the Power Wagon ready. Wifey will drive it. And getting the motorhome ready and packed. I'll drive it.
